So basically, this computer is too old to fix, and I need either a new tower, or a whole new computer. Blah. This one is pretty old (I got it for 8th grade graduation) and it only has 256mb of RAM. So basically even if I tried to get more RAM and spruce up this computer it would end up costing me more than buying a new one would ( Read more... )

I would try here:
http://www.techforless.com/
My boyfriends brother just got an awesome computer from there a few months ago and it only cost him $400. Windows was included, a really good graphics card, motherboard, and processor, including a mouse and keyboard. The only thing he skipped out on was a monitor.

www.newegg.com sometimes has good deals too, I got my $120 dollar graphics card for $60 from them. Although I haven't seen an awesome deal like that in a long time on there. Techforless has been beating them out.

Also, if you end up with something with Vista on it, make sure it either comes with 2gb of ram or you can buy another stick. Vista really needs two to be functional doing anything other then browsing the web. 4is better, and ram is pretty cheap now.
And if you are looking to play games on it, look for something without integrated graphics, or that at least comes with a PCI-e slot so that you can upgrade the graphics in the future.

I've heard pretty bad things about VISTA, so I'm trying to stick with Windows Seven. I really liked XP and am sad it will be extinct soon.

Dumb question, but if I have a dell Monitor, will that work with a tower from another company?

I have a dell monitor, if I buy an HP tower (since they seem to be the cheapest with what I want) will it work?

I've been building custom PCs since I was 13. If you need help or advice, you can feel free to ask me.

Aside: Lol pre-built computers still *have* VGA out? That's crazy. Any decent GPU only has DVI out, usually 2 for SLI. I think the person up there has some outdated info, honestly. On-board GPUs are much better than most people think. You're not playing Crysis are you (this is a tech joke :|).

ALSO: RAM is cheap unless you're looking for super awesome ~gaming~ RAM. I understand if your mobo is too old there's no reason to upgrade the RAM anyway, but I have an ancient laptop and with some minor tweaking and 2 1gig sticks it plays WoW on minimum settings. Old computers can do more than you'd think. :D

The fact your computer is a P4 chipset says a lot. It makes me all nostalgic (in a good way, I LOVED my P4 when I had it... all those years ago). But likely you couldn't expand to more than 1gig without just wasting shit at that point. I also don't know how many slots you have so if the max it could read is 512mb/slot and it only has one slot, well you get the jist ( ... )

Yeah they do, ours monitors are VGA and DVI. Although I did mix up a vga port a minute ago with the parallel port that was on my old computer. >_> I just remembered the huge ass port. Concrete memory, I has none. She was asking if she could use her old monitor, I had assumed that since her rig was older that it had a VGA connector ( ... )
