Let's consult Webster:

Mulch- Half-rotten straw, or any similar light, porous, organic
substance strewn on the ground, as over the roots of plants,
to protect from heat, drought, etc., and to hinder weed
growth and preserve moisture.

So usually woodchips and sometimes pine needles, placed on top of gardens and around trees.

I certainly don't mind you asking. If you don't mind me asking, when do I get to meeet you? YARRRR!
