When it comes to the baby, I am Mommy and J is Mama. Just makes sense to assign it that way, since in Chinese, 'mother' is 'ma ma.' In sign language, I am ASL-mother and J is Taiwan Sign Language-mother (index finger and pinkie up with index touching side of chin; move hand away from chin and put index down so only pinkie remains up). It's the opposite with us- Lucas has had a strong Mommy preference since he was born. I don't know how he knew when he was being held by me as opposed to K but he always did and though he loves his Daddy, he still gets more upset when I leave him with his Daddy to go to work or yoga but barely even whimpers when K leaves for work. It's always bothered K a lot. I'm guessing there's just some inborn thing that happens but I'm sure as they get older, it becomes less that way.
