For those interested in my thesis project, I have finished this introduction
paragraph.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the notion that there is a model of spiritual development within the tradition of Sufism, which, once identified, will be a valuable tool for today’s interfaith pastoral and spiritual care provider. Chapter one will lay the foundation for this argument by providing an exploration of the necessary terms, asumptions and goals of this project. Chapter two will provide an indepth investigation of the writings and teachings several important Sufi Masters, across the ages, as well as investigating the historical roots of pastoral and spiritual care and its modern strengths and weeknesses. Chapter three will conclude this investigation by bring together elements of the prevous two chapters and attempting to address the value of our model of Sufi spiritual direction inlight of modern spiritual directors. The final chapter will provide an application of our ideas in a practical sense. In this way, I hope to provide a useful method for the spiritual and pastoral care providers who wish are interested in a major or minor integration of Sufi teachings into their practice.
