yukitsu CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Abe Takaya from Ookiku Furikabutte
In-Game Name: Takaya Abe
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Position & Ship: Pilot on the Fierta, plane Catcher.
Appearance:
Abe has a shock of prickly black hair and large, lazy grey eyes set on a square-jawed face. He stands at about 5’8” tall, with a lean frame, wiry muscles, and thickset thighs. Abe is also perpetually frowning, his expression more often severe than not.
His clothing is usually made up of overalls for when he’s lounging around in the hanger, pilot gear when he’s in the air, and plain trousers and a button-down shirt when anywhere else. He carries himself with hard-earned grace and confidence, and he exudes the feeling that the last thing Abe would want would be to be disturbed. Basically, Abe carries himself like someone older than he is.
Personality:
Abe may seem grouchy to most people, but he’s not actually grumpy so much as severe and very no-nonsense. He is gifted with dry wit and even drier humor, but these traits are often pushed to the side by his very hot temper once it's triggered. Abe is fairly easy to irritate, especially by people who question him, people who don’t follow his orders, and people who impose on his private space. He raises his voice often, which usually startles and frightens people of weaker personalities.
Suffice to say, Abe is more than just a little bit of a control freak and obsessive-compulsive. He’s very intelligent, often believes that he’s always right and that his way is the most efficient way of doing things. This does not, of course, sit well with others, especially not with people who are about as hard-headed as and older than he is.
One of the things that people may be reminded of when looking at Abe on his bad days is an old man chasing kids out of their yard - indeed, despite his years, Abe tends to act like an older man: territorial, possessive, and entirely unreasonable and steadfast in what he thinks is right. It so happens that what he thinks is right is his way.
However, Abe isn’t all that bad. A lot of his worse personality quirks are only triggered when his temper is. When he's in a good enough mood, he's pleasant enough to be with, though a little bewildered at other people's shortcomings, quirks and differences with him. When he gets along with someone, he's pretty all right and tends to mellow down a lot. There are also many things that he doesn't care about, and he doesn't usually get irritated over those.
Also, being abrasive and direct to the point is natural to him, but he does realize that this isn’t the proper approach to everything and that sometimes, he does need to tone down. He puts conscious effort into being… civil and controlled when possible, though of course his temper takes him places more often than not. He doesn’t quite have a soft side to him, but he does have a conscience. When he snaps at people for things that are not their fault, he makes effort to make up for it by trying as best as he can to be nicer after (with varying degrees of success).
Note that he doesn’t have a problem with authority at all, so most of his communication and personality issues only come out with his peers. He follows orders well enough, with the occasional protest and strongly-voiced suggestion, but in general, he does as he’s told without much fuss. It helps if the superior is a respectable one.
Abilities/Weapons:
Abe has two main skills: He’s a good pilot, and a good strategist.
He used to be a part of a team of aerobatic fliers and was their on-air coordinator. Basically, on top of joining the crew’s formations, he was also the one dictating the various moves and actions that his fellow pilots were so supposed to do from his place among them, though many of these were from their coaches on the ground. Most of their moves were choreographed, of course, but Abe used to be one of the members who planned the movements out, and along with the coach, was primarily trusted with coming up with the team’s strategies. These are now the same strategies that he translates onto the battlefield. His specialty as a pilot had been in stunts.
It’s only lately that he’s learned to dogfight, but he’s proving quick on the pickup, and his aim is very good. Needless to say, Abe is good at multitasking, and thinking of good ways for himself or his team to get the advantage over any opponent. He has excellent hand-eye coordination, is hardworking, and has a good head on his shoulders for someone so young.
Beyond those, Abe is also a competent mechanic, owing to the fact that his family has been into planes since forever and Abe is an obsessive, territorial kid who doesn’t like it when other people touch his plane. He’s a plane geek, in every sense of the word, though of course application is usually a different thing from theories entirely.
He pilots a two-seater named Catcher. He can take on either role effectively, though he is much better as an on-air navigator than as the pilot actually doing the stunts and maneuvering. If he works in a team, he will still refuse to take on a partner, but will probably work as the on-air navigator for the rest of the team from his plane, all while staying at the back of the formation.
How well can your character hack?:
Back in his days as an athlete, one of Abe’s jobs was to spy on opposing teams to see what their plans of action were. He eventually got pretty good at it, though his skill is nothing notable. He can hack up to easy to medium difficulty.
Weaknesses:
Abe is very, very short on patience when it comes to things that he cares about, and tends to bite people’s heads off for the smallest things on bad days. His pride is as big as Ivona itself, which means that he does not like apologizing or bowing to other people’s wishes, though he does recognize it when the needs comes. Suffice to say, not many people tend to befriend Abe, and he doesn't make an effort to reach out to people.
Abe is often confused by normal conduct in society, especially when they involve him. That’s not to say that he’s a barbarian, but there are just some things that he doesn’t get, like the concept of romance or sympathy. While he does understand why he should try and work these into his life, understanding is easier than actually acting on it. It doesn’t help that people irritate him more than they should anyone his age, with the end result that he often snaps at people ‘for being stupid’. This also alienates others from him.
He can be a perfectionist or obsessive, and because he’s a control freak, he also tends to be very hands-on with things. Abe can push himself beyond his limits if he isn’t reminded to rest, which can lead to him self-destructing. Latest events have also made him less careful of his own health, though he fancies that he’s built like a horse and can withstand most ailments.
Abe is only human, and a young one at that. He is, at most, athletic, but he does not possess physical gifts or abilities that surpass those of anyone else’s around him. He also can’t use magic - it can be said that he completely ignored the existence of such, since magic did not have a place in his sport.
A part of his history is also a strained elbow. He overworked himself during one rigorous practice session, and hurt his elbow when a plane bumped into his (truth: he bumped into the other plane) during the competition after, forcing him into a rough landing. He’s already recovered completely from this, but it does stiffen up sometimes, and he is very careful not to re-injure his elbow.
As a pilot, he flies a plane actually meant for two; however, he’s sworn off partners, so he’s forced to take on both the task of the pilot and the on-air navigator on his own. This can be very stressful at times, since he has to do the maneuvers, shooting and navigation simultaneously.
History:
Abe was born into a family of plane-geeks and pilots in Melior. His father and little brother are racers, while he had been into aerobatics, himself. At thirteen, he joined a local team of young aerobatic fliers, the Todakita and became their on-air navigator. Life was good for a while, until he was assigned to a two-seater and got a partner pilot by the name of Haruna Motoki.
Motoki was a great pilot - practically a genius - but tended to be very pissy and fickle about flying. The older boy was obsessed about physical safety and avoiding all injuries, which meant that even if he could do the stunts Abe prescribed, he still wouldn’t. Abe found Motoki practically impossible to control, though Motoki liked him fairly well and Abe admired the elder pilot for his skills. Eventually, their failed partnership cost their team an important win and their relationship became much more strained afterward.
He left the team when he was about sixteen and joined another team full of newbies called Nishiura. He had a stuttering wreck of a partner pilot, Mihashi, who was good at what he did; Abe got along with the him well enough through the sheer power of him being a control freak and Mihashi's terror. Despite their freshness, the team worked very hard and eventually won many small competitions. The team itself also expanded through the years, turning from a group of ten into several dozen. Competition within the team became more cutthroat.
It was during a big show that the accident happened: Abe overworked himself during practice sessions and in strategy meetings. This had repercussions on his health, and he was feeling ill on the big day. Unfortunately, he didn’t want to back out of that particular performance and still joined the formation. It was in the middle of a particularly difficult turn that his vision suddenly blurred - he accidentally hit another plane in his formation and was forced into a rough landing, hurting his elbow in the process.
The injury was a slight fracture, but it effectively took him out of all practices and aerobatic competitions for the next few months. When he came back fully recovered, he had already been replaced and he found that he couldn’t catch up with the team anymore. Bitter about this, he moved on to other teams, but found that he couldn’t really fit in any of them, and he got into more fights than any athlete would care to involve his name in.
Eventually, his parents took him aside and told him to try traveling in the hopes that he would find passion for flying again, and that maybe he’ll snap out of his slump.
Needless to say, Abe did not take well to the suggestion, but left with his plane soon after. He traveled around a little until he realized that there was only so much he could do on his own and with limited finances. Unwilling to ask his parents for money, he decided to board an airship in search of work.
