Do these indulgences counteract any sin? Could I suckerpunch a Cardinal and then buy (excuse me, "charitable donation") my way back into Heaven? Because that's kind of awesome.
Without an indulgence though, you probably just get like 500 Hail Marys, but this way, you can just charitably donate and confess yourself back into Heaven, because the Catholic Church (I mean, God) forgives everything...for a price, of course.
My favorite part of the article is the Catholic official's response to why they are being reintroduced:
“Why are we bringing it back?” asked Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio of Brooklyn, who has embraced the move. “Because there is sin in the world.”
Clearly is meant as a "Holy shit did I just religiously blow your mind" statement, or at the very least one that leads the reader to say "Oh, that makes sense." But it raises a bunch of questions like, has there not been sin for the past 150 years? Is it really heating up?
I guess it reads a little better than "Because all those child molestation suits are making the Catholic Church a little less rich."
