T-38 talons are the training version of the Northrop F-5. This aircraft is a very light weight turbo-jet that is barely supersonic at high altitude and with afterburners. It was designed in the 1950's. Compared to it's many contemporary aircraft such as the F-4 & F-104 it is fairly slow and not all that agile. It certainly has NEVER set any records for any aircraft catagory Again it was developed as a trainer. No pilot in the USA in the past 35 years has flown it on a regular basis. If Lee and Kara where airforce fighter pilots in the 21st century they would be assigned either the F-16 or the F-15. If they were exceptional pilots (top 2% of flight school grads) they would be assigned to F-22 raptor training. Thosr aircraft are the op fighter aircraft not the T-38 talon. In fact you can buy a T-38 on the surplus market fairly cheap (under 100,000 dollars.)
Oh FYI Airforce pilots do not fly from carriers, those are naval aviators.
