I borrowed this for a roleplay journal, but I was wondering what controls the width of the header bar? I'd love to thin it down a little, but am afraid of breaking the CSS codes to do so. Any help would be loved!

you would have to change the background position of the image under "body" to something like "0 -50px" then mess around with the #header and #sidebar stuff. it's quite involved to change it as this layout was made specifically for the height of the header bar.
