One of my housemates is a postgrad in the film studies dept if you have specific questions you want me to ask. :) She seems to like it, but I'm not really sure what all is involved.

As for Aber, I think it's pretty awesome. I'm from Washington and Oregon, and didn't think it was that much of an adjustment (the climate and a lot of the atmosphere is similar, though I know somebody from Georgia who's had more trouble adjusting to the UK than I have). It is a small town and out in the boonies, but it's a very cool place--because of the university there's actually quite a bit going on, and it's one of those towns where once you've been here a week, you won't be able to step out the door without running into somebody you know.

Agreed. Aber's a really social town. I'm a sociable person and if this place felt isolated, I wouldn't have stayed here to do more qualifications, get married, raise babies...

Occasionally you'll find that you really want to go to bigger town to do some super-shopping or something, but it makes it more worthwhile. DAY TRIP!

:) I think you'll be fine, this place has everything you need to stay awesome.

Old Graduate here. I don't know anything about the Film and TV dept, except that they very inconsiderately built it over a nice direct path I used to take down from Halls to the Hugh Owen building....

It always seemed nice enough.

It's an isolated community in that it will take an a couple of hours to get to the nearest 'big towns', but not in the sense you'll be alone.

It's such a friendly place, with nice people, and the uni's great. And you really can't go into the town without spotting at least one person you know.

And nice shops/cafes/restuarants and bars. I recommend 'Little Italy' if it's still there for fab indian food. And you'll have to have cocktails in the Cambrian at least once (I presume they still do then...)

I'm envious that you get to go there, it's been ages since I've been back, and I still miss it.

I did. In my denfense I was half asleep - that's what I get for not paying attention.

All those ones are new since I was last there (went back on holiday a few years ago). Now I'm hungry too. And a cheese sandwich is not now going to cut it...

I was there for four years and miss it like crazy... I didn't do Film & TV but I've heard really, really good things about the department and the lecturers from friends that did do courses there. :)

As for feeling isolated... I don't think it does feel that way, there's a really strong feeling of community in a lot of ways, and it's a really nice place to call home. In some ways it being a tad geographically isolated actually means it's less likely to actually feel isolated as I found that most people stayed at weekends for example, while I know people at other unis close to home often go home for weekends... There's always something going on, always people around and it's a really great, friendly town. If you're used to a huge city it might be a massive change, but there's a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants and things like that.

All I can say is I wish I could go back myself! :) Hope this helps a little bit!

I spent the most amazing five months in Aberystwyth and will someday return for good. The town is quiet and friendly, and I feel far more isolated in my medium-sized college town in mid-Michigan than I ever did in Aber. Aber has plenty of nightlife, shopping and recreational opportunities, especially if you're at all inclined towards rambling and the outdoors. And as others have pointed out before me, you're only a train-ride away from larger cities where the shopping and entertainment is a bit more diversified. Anyway, hope that helps - Aberystwyth is absolutely my favorite place in the world!
