Oh that orchid thing is SO COOL. I think the panda thing is lies. All lies. Especially since the last survey was in 2002. I could barely live in that horrid place.. how could a fragile panda live there? I *hope* the good people at Cardiff are correct, regardless. As far as the teaching evolution to kids things goes.. all I can do is shake my head at the idiots who are withholding the facts in schools. For shame.

actually, if properly performed, mark-recapture studies can provide pretty accurate estimates of population size... if you read the journal article, their extensive sampling and powerful methodology means that they are probably very close to the actual number... granted, doubling the estimate means that population size estimates went from about 30 individuals to about 60 individuals, but more is better than less.
