Mike, I'm sorry for your loss, but this is a wonderful tribute to your father-in-law, who sounds like he was a terrific person. Take care!

Beautiful tribute, Mike. I really have a sense of what he was like and why you will miss him. I would have enjoyed meeting him. Hugs to you.

78 doesn't sound old to me either, but in any case we are never ready to lose a beloved parent.

Karl/Dad sounds like he was a real sweetheart. And he sure done good in the daughter-raising department. I'm sorry for your loss, and for Sue's--please give her my deepest sympathy.

That was a really nice tribute to your father-in-law, Mike! I'm sorry about your loss.

I call my mother-in-law "Mrs. Snoblen." I feel disloyal to my mom, who died a long time ago, if I call anyone else Mom. (I don't call my dad's wife "Mom," either. Of course, the fact that she is almost young enough to be my sister is another reason...) And I don't feel comfortable calling an older person by their first name; it seems too informal. "Mrs. Snoblen" seems a bit too formal, but that's what I use, anyway. I guess there needs to be a special title for parents-in-law.

78 years is actually longer than the average life expectancy for males. When your father-in-law was born, his life expectancy was about 60 years. I know that there are people older than 78 at the old age home, but they are what statisticians call "a selected sample." Generally, only people who live to a ripe old age end up in an old age home.
