Instead of everything around me when I go (somewhere that is presumably) outside being building-shaped structures covered in unpleasantries, they are now castle-shapes structures covered in unpleasantries.

Is this... typical of this place?

Typical in the sense that it's a random annoying change, yes. The Island has these stupid little 'events' every once and a while then everything goes back to 'normal' within a week or so. Tch, about the only halfway decent thing about it is that they occasionally trigger memories.
