I watched this film twice in the past 24 hours. Once as a cam version on my comp and the second time--properly, in a cinema.
To start with, I've never seen a film which captivates you so much. I really loved it but i still can't quite put the finger on what i loved about it. It's just the colors and the sound... and the music ( and it's fantastic--i am getting soundtrack as soon as i can).. and the voices.
In the very beginning from a sunny Feniks you get into a misty and rainy town I don't even remember a name of. It's not just Isabella getting there. Somehow it's You. Me. the feeling of being in an alien place, where you hardly know anybody and don't quite fit in. Normal school though. Nrmal people. YOu're "a new toy", the news of the week... or month. FIrst lunch, first sports classes... But you still feel completely out of place. Until you see them. The Colins. And you get carried away. YOu can't take your eyes of them. The way they move, the way they look, the way they... live... you are enthralled. And saddenly you're not so odd. Somehow youre pale skin and love for being on your own is not something that makes you unique and unfitting. You keep looking at them as you can't stop doing this. And questions... so many questions. And then this Edward starts talking to you. And you're hipnotised by his voice, his eyes. It's not like you to fall for a stranger, but you've already done that even though you still don't admit it. Cold skin, strength, speed... all facts ft together as a jigsaw and you know he's a vampire. part of you is terrified because he's different and you're not quite sure if they can feel love or any other emotion you do and your'e affraid to lose him even before you have him. "I am designed to attract you," he says. And you can't help listening to his voice, which is ment to capture your attention and pull you in like cheese in a mousetrap. You listen to his controlled words. YOu look into his golden eyes. You watch his smile, which hides the monster and insecurities all tied in a huge knot inside him. He tried to scare you, but the only thing you can say is "You're beautiful". HE smiles at how you really don't get how dangerous he is. And you don't. You don't until it's too late, until that other vampire appears and all the people you just thought as different start acting like... animals defending you as one of them.
The bad-guy vampire bites you and despite all odds you're glad. YOu're still under the spell and you want to be like him, like Edward to be with him forever. You watch this family care for each other, protect each other, be together through hard times. You watch the beasts being people simply because they don't want to become monsters. You're still under the spell but now you also know how hard it is for them to be around you, around other people and this understanding leads you even deaper into a trap and you desperately want to become one of them. He refuses despite the temptation, says you don't really want it. but you do, at least you think you do. As much as any 17 year old thinks about love and forever. But he's been 17 for 90 years now and he knows better.
You look into his eyes, listen to his voice, watch the controlled smile on his face and you fall and fall, you let the spell do it's work.
You're still under the spell hearing that music in your head three hours later taking a bus home. For the first time in my life i've seen the film shown from a character's point of view done so skillfully, so accurately and so realisticaly. Every word in every conversation is so at it's place, every intonation half-smile half-look is so measured and exact and so pure at the same time.
I still don't really get what is so special about this film. I only know that it captured my attention yesterday and refuses to release it.
