Summary: The Doctor and Rose live a fantastic life on Pete's World until one drunk driver shatters it all.
Previous Rose marvels at the little giggling girl. She didn’t take many clothes with her. Only two changes for either of them and now Cathie is wearing Jamie’s white pants and blue shirt, one of the few outfits she’s saved from his early days.
“Come in,” she replies at the soft knock on the door and is surprisingly delighted to see River.
“Hello,” Rose says hesitantly.
“Hello,” the other woman says smiling at the girl still on the bed. “Would you introduce me to the lady?”
Rose smiles. “Lady Cathleen, may I introduce professor River Song to you,” she plays along. “She’s a very good person and I would demand you to behave yourself.” She winks at the now sitting giggling girl and turns to River. “Professor, River Song, may I introduce Lady Cathleen, who’s a remarkable child but sometimes too nosey and energetic, not that I’m complaining.”
“Nice to meet you, young Lady,” River replies laughing. “Just like her father then.”
Rose watches the other woman closely. “Yeah.” They both keep quiet for a moment avoiding each other’s gaze.
“Rose,..” “River,…” they start simultaneously and smile.
“You first,” Rose says, the tension of the previous moment dissipating.
“Okay, thank you. Rose, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry,” Rose looked not understanding at her. “I’m sorry for making it all so difficult for you. I guess you’ve lost enough already and losing the Doctor here is… what I want to say is, you won’t lose him. I understand, that you came here… back to him. And found he’s with another woman and it’s dreadful. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry for his bad driving and for the whole thing…”
“I didn’t want to come back here.” Rose interrupts her quietly. “It wasn’t my decision. We got into a car crash. My Doctor and my…my son Jamie… they died and I survived. I was pregnant… Cathie. She’s Gallifreyan. She’s regenerated. She has two hearts and God knows what else. And she’s telepathic and I have no idea how many other surprises I’ll get in time. The Doctor said if anything happened to him I should bring the baby to this Universe and find the other Doctor. Something about mental bond… It’s complicated. So here I am…. It’s ironic really. The first time in my life I didn’t want to get back to him when we got separated and this time I had to…”
“I’m sorry.”
Rose meets Rivers eyes. “It’s not your fault. It’s no one’s I suppose. It’s just… Don’t be afraid of me. I’m not going to travel with him again. My husband died not long ago and I loved him very much. And you know… it does hurt seeing him, your Doctor, as alive as he always was. My Doctor and him… they are like mirrored copies. It drove me mad at first.” She can’t help smirking and is relieved in a way to see River returning the smile.
“I guess it did. He told me about what happened then. You know…sometimes he has that sad faraway look in his eyes when he thinks I’m not watching. I think he still loves you. Not that I’m saying he doesn’t love me. He would never say the words though. He even managed without them on our wedding or the closest thing to it you could get. He missed you, you know.”
Rose looks at River. She really is good. Rose smiles, she hasn’t doubted River would be great. A bit like Donna probably. “You know, the Doctor is an exceptional man with exceptional feelings and hearts. He does love the whole of creation, some of the individuals just more than the others. I think he does love all his companions. Everybody in his own way. And he is in love with you. And I’m glad,” her voice is trembling a bit and she pauses for a moment to regain control. “I’m glad he has you. It hurts, it does, but I’m glad he’s not alone and he’s happy. As happy as he could be with all those guilt and sadness he carries with him. You take a bit of it away. Thank you for that.” Rose is surprised to see River blushing. With all Rose’s experience, the woman was not the blushing kind. “And you know what? When you catch his sad looks at you when he thinks you’re not looking… It’s not because of me or whomever he’s met and lost before. He will lose you too… eventually. And me. And everyone else, except Jack and Cathie probably. It takes much courage to love someone you’ll definitely lose.”
“The curse of the Time Lords,” River says quietly.
“That’s what he told me once,” Rose says back. “I’m glad he’s brave enough to take his chance at last.”
They look at each other for a long time seeking confirmation and acceptance in each other’s eyes. Rose smiles first and River returns her own gentle smile.
“I’m glad I met you, Rose Tyler You’re just as brilliant as he said you were.”
“Thank you. And technically not Tyler anymore, but I’ve never used the new family name anyway. He picked John Who! Of all possible names! Doctor John Who! And I’m glad to meet you too. Shall we go downstairs now and present her Ladyship to the world?”
“Guess that’s what we’ll do.”
Rose stretches her hands to pick the girl in her arms and carry her down, but Cathie has her own plans and jumps down from the bed. Both women watch her finding her balance and then stumbling to the still open door.
“Okay, Cathie, but I will carry you down the stairs. Don’t want you break you arm or leg.” Rose says pretending to be strict.
The girl makes River laugh with her reply. “Good. Sta-iws Comp-li-ca-ted.”
“Like father like daughter.”
“She’s only 8 months old! Can you imagine her at fifteen years?” Rose replies laughing.
“Oh God, the teenage female version of the Doctor. I want to see that.”
“Guess you will. You’re always welcome to visit, you know. As soon as I settle down that is.”
“Thank you, Rose. I’d love to and I’ll make sure he hasn’t missed the destination more than a few days.”
“Yeah, the first time he brought me home we were 12 months late instead of 12 hours he intended to get us to.”
“His driving hasn’t improved at all then. I’m not good with it either though. Sometimes I go on my own journeys. I’m an archeologist and I love it. But sometimes things turn out bad and I call him. Only once had I reached the Doctor I was aiming for. I’ve met 5 of his later incarnations!!”
“Five?” Rose halts and stares at her. “But he’s in his 10th form. Time Lords have only thirteen.”
They stare at each other puzzled. “Better not experiment to find out how’s that possible.” Rose says half-joking. They both nod and resume their way downstairs. “Yeah.” “Yeah.”
