Timezone: EST
Other Characters Played: N/A
Character: Rachel (last name never actually stated in the books, but since her cousin is Jake Berenson, and their fathers are brothers, it should be Berenson)
Series/Fandom: Animorphs (Book series)
Original or Template version: Original
Age: Sixteen
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Rachel is often described as looking like a model. She has long blond hair and blue eyes, and always seems to look good no matter the situation. Even though she could wear a potato sack and manage to make it work for her, she loves fashion, and when not in her morphing suit (her gymnastics leotard) Rachel can be seen in the latest fashion.
She is physically fit and loves gymnastics, though she always says how she is too tall to ever consider making a career of it. All her training allows her to appear graceful. She always appears confident and in control of the situation, and there is something about her that demands respect.
Personality:Before the war, Rachel was an average girl. She loved shopping and fashion, flirting, doing gymnastics, and trying to get her best friend Cassie to change her wardrobe. She was a daddy's girl and craved his attention. After her parent's divorce she had issues like other kids, but dealt with them normally. After their encounter with Elfangor, all that changed.
The blond, model-esque popular girl turned out to have all the makings of a soldier. She quickly acquired the nickname "Xena: Warrior Princess" thanks to Marco and was the only one in the group who actually seemed to enjoy the war. It was almost as if she were born to fight.
Throughout the series she struggles with this. She's often pressured to be the one who never hesitates; who's always willing to take risks and is "the brave one". And although she very much is that person and puts on an appearance of complete confidence, she is scared on the inside, and worries almost as much as the rest of the Animorphs do. At one point she freaks out a bit: "I just wanted to run away but I didn't think I could, so I was brave because that's the way I'm supposed to be."
Along with the natural warrior inside of her, she also has a dark side. Rachel will catch herself pondering extremely dark things, such as what would happen if she challenged Jake's leadership. She makes snap decisions and does rather sadistic things, such as threaten to twist a fork into David's (a person who was threatening the Animorphs at the time) ear and even kill his family. Or while in her great horned owl morph, she will get caught up in the moment and imagine capturing prey even though she has no reason to.
Jake, the leader, is very much aware of her nature, and will actually use her violent tendencies to his advantage. This angers her at first, but in the end she accepts it, and knows that he is only doing what he has to do.
However, she isn't an evil person. Her dark nature is extreme when compared to the other's. Rachel sees the larger picture and is willing to risk a few innocent people to win the war and save all of humanity, while Cassie spends time hung up over decisions such as this. She also believes that if an enemy plans on killing you, it's alright to kill that enemy. Marco and her are alike when it comes to this.
Even so, when it comes to Tobias, Rachel is willing to sacrifice anything to save him. The two have the most obvious relationship in the series and constantly worry about one another. When she thought he was dead, Rachel was prepared to kill in order to avenge him.
As the war progresses it becomes clear that she will never be normal again. It's often said that she has become addicted to the war and the rush that it gives her. She's reckless in battle and feels as if that's where she belongs. At one point Crayak, an evil entity in the series, wanted to recruit Rachel; he believed that her apparent "bloodthirstiness" could be useful to him, but he failed. She may love battling evil, but she isn't evil.
Ultimately it was the fact that she was so good at fighting in the war, and that she was up for any challenge given to her, that got her killed. Jake sent her to kill his brother, Tom (also her cousin) and she accepted. Rachel knew that she was the only one who could do it. The world needed Jake, Jake needed Marco's intelligence, Ax was needed for multiple purposes, Cassie would never agree to it, and she wouldn't let Tobias go. Before her death she cried, telling Tobias that she loved him. Though she didn't regret it, when she died the Ellimist froze time to speak to her. She asked him if what she did mattered, if it really helped, and he told her that it did. This comforted her, although she still didn't want to die.
Abilities/Strengths: Fighting abilities: Rachel was given the ability to morph into any animal that she can physically touch. When she touches an animal with her bare skin, it becomes calm, and she will absorb the DNA. The DNA stays with her for all time in her blood stream, the way it was when she first acquired it.
While in morph, she can communicate using "thought-speak", and can control who can listen and who can't.
However there are some setbacks. She can only stay in morph for two hours, or else she becomes a nothlit, permanently stuck in the body of that animal. She can only morph wearing skin-tight clothing or naked. While in the process of morphing, she is vulnerable. Rachel also can't switch from one morph to the other; she must first go back to her human form, and rapidly morphing is draining.
Rachel's list of acquired morphs includes: African elephant, bald eagle (preferred morph for flying), shrew, cat, wolf, trout, dolphin (preferred morph for water), seagull, ant, cockroach, housefly, grizzly bear (preferred battle morph), rat, termite, skunk, great horned owl, bat, Hork-Bajir (an alien species from the series), flea, horse, parrot, hammerhead shark, mole, mosquito, anteater, seal, polar bear, sperm whale, chimpanzee, eel, squirrel, cockatiel, cheetah, honeybee, human (they don't like to morph "sentient" creatures, and definitely not humans, so this was a rare case), giant squid, orca, beaver, starfish.
A list of animals she has acquired, but can't use due to them being "sario rip morphs" include: spider monkey, jaguar, Deinonychus.
She acquired the crocodile, but had and allergic reaction to it and "expelled" it, and can no longer use that morph.
Personal abilities/strengths: Rachel is talented at gymnastics, and good at matching outfits. =D
Weaknesses: Obviously the two hour time limit for the morphing ability, but besides that she has a lot of flaws.
Rachel is reckless, short-sighted, claustrophobic, and extremely proud. She is always caught between two extremes: her more "normal" self (the one before the war) and her more "Xena: Warrior Princess" self (the one who loves the battle). She possesses nooo leadership abilities.
History: Note: Due to the length of this series (64 books) the history will be shorter and choppier than normal.
Here is a link to it's wiki page, in case it's needed.
It all started when Rachel was thirteen years old. Jake (her cousin), Marco (his best friend), Tobias (some nerd those two had felt sorry for and had hung out with that night), Cassie (her best friend) and Rachel herself were walking home from the mall. They decided to take a shortcut through an abandoned construction site when an alien spaceship came crashing down from the sky. An injured alien war prince, named Prince Elfangor-Sirinial-Shamtul comes out of the ship and explains to them how earth is being invaded by a parasitic race of aliens called Yeerks. Yeerks resemble a slug and enter a species through the ear canal, going into the brain and taking complete control of the body.
He tells the kids that the good aliens, Andalites (his people) will not come to earth until it's too late. So it's up to them. In order to help them, he gives them the ability to morph into any living creature that they can touch and explains how it works and all that. Visser Three, leader of the Yeerk invasion of earth and the only Yeerk ever to infest an andalite, shows up and kills Prince Elfangor.
The next day they realize it all wasn't some freakish dream and start trying out their new ability. They find out that Jake's brother (Rachel's cousin) is a Controller (aka a human being controlled by a Yeerk) and try and rescue him. It doesn't work out, everything backfires and Tobias gets trapped in a red-tailed hawk morph.
This is how it all starts.
Stuff happens, they make little advances, until Cassie and Tobias start having strange dreams. They acquire morphs to travel to the ocean, not sure if it's a trap or not but willing to take a risk, and discover Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill, the little brother of Prince Elfangor, trapped in a crashed dome ship beneath the ocean. They rescue him, recruit him into the Animorphs, and he lives in the woods near Cassie's barn.
Stuff happens (like Jake being infested by a Yeerk, but luckily it's noticed in time), Ellimist tells them that they will lose the war but they decide to continue fighting, Rachel's own insecurities are revealed, they learn about the Chee and Pemalites, they travel back in time (accidentally).
Rachel saves a boy who fell in a crocodiles pit, and acquired the morph while doing so at the same time. Jake yells at her for taking a risk. Later that night, she finds herself unintentionally morphing -- and without going back to her human form. She doesn't tell Jake this for fear of being removed from the next mission.
It turns out that she is allergic to crocodile DNA, and must go through a process called hereth illint to expel it. Jake pulls her from the mission until she undergoes it, but she lies to him, saying she went through with it the next day.
During the mission she got nervous/excited, which started the uncontrolled morphing, then the real hereth illint. Chaos follows, but stuff happens and all is well. After the mission they watch Xena: Warrior Princess together.
More stuff happens, the Ellimist gives Tobias the ability to morph again (and allows him to travel back in time to acquire his own human body as a morph), the free Hork Bajir colony is established, Rachel saves a crazy suicidal man, they discover Yeerks are allergic to oatmeal (only the Instant Maple and Ginger kind though), more stuff happens, then David is introduced...
...The first human besides the original five to be given the morphing power and told of the invasion. It turns out to be a horrible idea. He impersonates Rachel and Jake's dead cousin Saddler, "kills" Tobias, and becomes an enemy quite quickly.
This starts to bring out more of the darker traits in Rachel. She tried to electrocute David when she believed Tobias was dead and Jake dying due to him, but was outwitted by David. They end up trapping him in rat morph.
More stuff happens, Tobias discovers that Prince Elfangor was his father (LONG story), Crayak appears again and they are used as playthings in the war between him and the Ellimist, Jake and Cassie kiss...
A mission comes up that furthers Rachel's relationship with Tobias. She asks his help in getting picked to morph a sperm whale to catch a giant squid, which is needed. He uses his eyesight (remember: he is trapped in the body of a hawk), and she draws one of the short straws. Then, he deliberately picks a short straw himself to stay with her.
He also lets his jealously show when T.T. asks Rachel out, and he insults them.
Stuff happens, the Yeerk Peace Movement begins (allowing Yeerks to morph under one condition: they become a nothlit), Marco has family issues (his mother, who humans think is dead, is actually Visser One and planning stuff), Jake has issues being a leader, Rachel morphs a starfish to rescue an earring and gets chopped in half, becoming two people, each possessing a part of her personality, Tobias is tortured, Rachel and Tobias kiss for the first time, Rachel tries to lead the Animorphs but fails miserably and almost got Cassie killed....
More stuff happens and Marco must tell his father about his secret life. He gets Rachel to help him. Stuff happens and Crayak tries to get Rachel to join his side. She refuses.
Then the real serious stuff starts happening. The Yeerks figure out who the Animorphs are, and that they are human. Rachel and Cassie tell their families about the invasion, and they join Marco and his parents in the Free Hork Bajir Valley to hide. Tom's parents are captured and infested. Tobias' mother, Loren, is rescued and brought to the valley, and given the ability to morph to heal her eyes.
The Animorphs realize they need more people on their side, so they recruit people who they know the Yeerks would never consider as Controllers: the disabled. They are called the Auxiliary Animorphs. During a recruiting session, Tom claims the Escafil device, and instead of allowing Jake to kill his own brother, Cassie allows Tom to escape with it. This is known as Cassie's betrayal.
Jake is now depressed. The morale of the group is down. The Yeerk's have the morphing power. But, the public is now aware of the invasion, and it becomes an all-out war.
The Yeerks build a massive Yeerk pool, and the Animorphs plan to destroy it. At first Ax is told by his people to stop them; they want the Yeerks to focus on earth, but he eventually goes against orders. The Yeerk pool is destroyed, and they are now majorly pissed off.
After learning of a plan to build a new Yeerk pool, Jake has an encounter with Taxxons, and then makes a pact with them. The Yeerk infesting his brother Tom wants to strike a deal, but he senses a trap, so he begins to form one of his own. The US army joins the Animorphs, Tom betrays the Animorphs but they had expected this, the auxiliary Animorphs are slaughtered, a Yeerk pool is drained to provide a distraction (killing thousands of Yeerks), Visser Three all but gives up, Jake asks Cassie to marry him a year after all this is over, Tom appears on a screen from a Blade Ship appearing victorious...when Rachel appears.
Jake ordered Rachel to kill Tom. His brother, her cousin. She agreed, knowing full well that she would most likely die doing this.
She didn't tell any of the others. She knew that she was Jake's "insurance policy"; that she would go along with whatever he asked her to. While she is making her way to her final battle she reflects on how it isn't fair; on how they are just about to win the war, and then she has to die.
She fully enjoys her last battle. In the end, when Tom is killed and she morphs back to human, she sees the Animorphs on a screen. Tobias had morphed back to human, just for her. He was crying. She tells him she loves him, and then she is killed.
The Ellimist then appears to her, and she asks if her life and death mattered. He tells her yes, and she is granted some comfort.
Major stuff happens, the war ends...
Her body is cremated after the war, and during the funeral Tobias appears and takes the urn away. They don't hear from him a while after. Those two become known as "The Lost Animorphs".
Even more stuff happens afterwards, but it doesn't involve Rachel.
