This is just depressing...

More officers is not the answer, in fact there really might not be an answer. If I have had one thing drilled into my skull recently by one of my profs its that more police means more arrests, but not less crime. Crime is caused by factors that simply can not be regulated by an increased police presence. Think about it ( Read more... )

But many people, particularly conservatives, do not like to admit that this is what happens when children are not given decent opportunities and education in their formative years and that is why it is in their own best interests to provide social services to the population at large. Clearly, there were things wrong with this kid. And I fear the fact that he wasn't a "native born" US citizen will just be used to stir up more xenophobia. *sigh* Blah. The whole VT thing is just an absolute tragedy. I'm heartbroken by the holocaust survivor who was gunned down saving the lives of his students. it just all sucks. :(

What puzzled me was that so many were gunned down. Where were the people fighting back, rushing him, trying to take away his gun? I fear in our school systems, our work places and our society in general we are taught to peacfully submit to violence and act like sheep. This is supposed to make us safer. I really don't see how. Someone tried to mug my Mom a few years back when she was a road tech for photo processing machines. She was on a pay phone doing her end of day thing and a drunk guy held and exacto knife to her throat, told her not to scream (this insulted her), to hang up the phone (she acted startled and let it drop so the phone tech could hear what would happen), and asked for her money and he wouldn't hurt her. So she thought about the money she had on her (only 20 in her sock) and how hard she worked for it, grabbed his had turned around, started turning towards him and said, well what about if I hurt you instead. Just the fact that she was resisting made him flee and my Mom had to fight the urge to jump in the Tech ( ... )
