LiveJournal tells me it's been 13 weeks since I posted anything here. I guess now that the sun is shining and my roof is no longer in danger of collapsing under ice, it is time to crawl out from under my rock. The general issue of individual differences in pain tolerance is an interesting one. For example, there is definitely a lot of evidence that anxiety and fear of the "unknown" aspects of uncontrollable pain (it's eventual peak, rate of change, duration) make it much more painful/less bearable. One strange experience I had when giving birth was that I very much wanted to have another woman around who had successfully survived giving birth. Sadly after she wished me good luck, my own Mom declined to stay with me even though I was begging her to stay...and the nurses were nice but rarely there for more than a minute or two until it came time to push. Whenever I heard other newborns crying at the moment of birth (this was a *really* old fashioned maternity ward with little privacy) I would gasp to the nurse "How long was she here?!" as if that had any relation to my own rate of progress. And they never answered me ( ... )
