Ooh, cool!! We're going to plant some strawberries and raspberries *and* blueberries! I'm so excited! I didn't even imagine strawberries could be container-grown...but I'm learning more all the time. =) It's so awesome having one's own garden!
Ooh, I wanted blueberries! But when I asked at the garden store after seeing a container of them among the strawberries and raspberries, the lady said, "Well, blueberries can be rather tricky in containers... I'd advise trying raspberries and strawberries this year to get the hang of growing berries, and then add blueberries next year." I decided to follow her advice. :)
I love gardening, especially having the herbs available. Last year I had so much basil I didn't know what to do with it all, LOL! (Too much for eating, not quite enough to make a batch of pesto. I ended up freezing some.) And there's just something primally satisfying about having your hands and arms in a big container of black dirt, knowing that you're going to be having living things around you pretty soon!
Hm...well, we were only planning on the strawbs in containers and the raspberries and blueberries in the actual garden beds. I'm going to read up on them a little more so I know what I need to do, but I'm up for the challenge, I think. If we get them to grow, I'll happily share with you!
I just watered the herbs this morning, and I was happy to see that they were starting to grow already! Woo! I'm only hoping our neighbourhood raccoon won't decide to partake. =)
There is something cool about gardening and being all dirty - I was saying to Rick that it was a physical manifestation of putting down roots while we were planting pansies last weekend. It was an amazing feeling. =) I was feeling all Mother-Earthy and power-of-the-Goddessy and liking the dirt between my fingers and toes. Yep, I'm going to enjoy this having my own garden thing, especially when I can get a proper composter to make some!
