had a problem the first semester i landed here. the path I took was use the debit card(issued by the bank where you have savings and checking account) and then apply for an amex, citicard...(these two are quite popular among students as they dont mandate credit history). Many people have told me that using debit card for online purchases is not fine. The money is gone from the account in case of fraud. The bank will reimburse in case of fraud, but have to go through all the hassles. I have applied for a secure credit card. That should work out and help me establish credit history here.
