My rule of thumb for how many cats is too many is (people in household) + 1, so 2 cats for 1 person is right on! I'm so sorry about Pearl, but if she's miserable then you're absolutely right, she needs a different situation. You're doing the responsible thing for her happiness.

I know the shelter's job is to get rid of cats, but I don't think that they should make you guilty for trying to make the cat happy. They should be concerned with finding the right home for their cats. I think it is very responsible to give her back. It would be hard to become attached to one and have to leave her, but having two cats really does make all the difference when you are gone more often. It really made a difference to my cat. She used to get laryngitis when I was gone and then need me to carry her around the whole night when I got back. She is much more independent now, and much happier.
