When I started this job, I thought I'd really like it once I figured out exactly what it was that I am responsible for. I think I've figured that part out, and I still don't love it. I like it, and I appreciate that I have a job (god knows there are so many unemployed people our age in the country right now), but I'm also really unfulfilled here ( Read more... )

often... all jobs sucks to some degree or another.

I've switched jobs more than I like, but it's good to find one that you can enjoy at least the basic activity and then demand changes as needed. E.g. if you like making sprockets, but Mr. Spacely is too much of a micro manager, rally with your coworkers to get him to bugger off ;)

Yeah - I got discouraged with my last job because I didn't have enough autonomy and authority. Now that I have it, I'm constantly searching for approval from my supervisor. Go figure. Maybe I'll sign up to do mystery shops from time to time to keep it interesting...

Yeah, having too much autonomy is bad when there really is authority - because it means they expect something from you - but you don't know exactly what. That happened when I was working in a school district. Then things got better, but by then I decided to quit.
