So. The whole outside communication thing is happening again. [Pause. She doesn't look very optimistic, but she is allowing herself to hope a little.] If anyone's out there.. This is Buffy. Buffy Summers.

[Long pause.]

Anyway, in light of more recent and chaotic events.. I'm going to go ahead and express the need for a security or action team. I've ( Read more... )

[Enjoy this, Buffy. Because it's a guy dressed as Bela Lugosi's Dracula, speaking in the thickest Transylvanian accent he can muster.] What a charming name.

[Oh great. Another one?] Dracula, right?

You know, if not for the certain Dracula I've come to know and avoid on this ship, I'd really start to wonder if all Draculas have an unyielding obsession with singling me out and annoying me.

Oh wait. The one here does that too.

Admittedly, this was kind of before my time, but from what I've gathered - [From being a paranoid freak network stalker. >____>] The last time something like this was actually in place on the Barge, it dissolved because of a huge abuse of power, or just an argument along the lines of who watches the Barge security team.

And besides, I think we did pretty okay without a formalized team, all things considered. People stepped up and we got things back to normal, just like we've done in every other crisis situation. I'm all for teaching people how to defend themselves, but creating an actual Justice League on board seems a little unnecessary to me.

Very very very very very late. (The dear_mun convo helped me reawaken her. :3) aboutpower November 21 2011, 08:34:06 UTC
[She listens with open ears and a somewhat unreadable expression. She trusts your judgement but believes she could do better than they did.] Right. Okay. So, the security team was given, or took, a bunch of power and some members abused such power? Now I get why it's no longer around.

No, I'm not saying it wasn't handled okay. It was handled well, great, even. I'm thinking of more of a day-to-day thing. Like patrols. And a contact list so even the newbies know who to call on if they need help.

Wait, strange?

Dick's wrong, but not by much. The original security team was dissolved due to a perceived concentration of power being placed in their hands during crises. The fact of the matter is that the team didn't 'run' the Barge at any point and that nobody was ever forced to obey their orders, but if you gather enough obnoxious wankers in one place, eventually they'll get suspicious of a small group of people taking on extra responsibilities for no extra reward.

[Pause.]

...the fact is that we have a security team, we always have. The only thing that's changed is that it's taboo to call them that. During any given disaster we'll always have a dozen or so people who have training or experience relevant to what's happening, even if who's in that group keeps changing. As a case in point, if we had had a security team last month they wouldn't have gotten things resolved any faster than the group of people who ended up volunteering to investigate.

[Her interest and attention? You have it completely, Tosh. She listens intently.] I can see that. Perceived or actual power, people are gonna get antsy.

I agree completely. I just- Maybe something like a security protocol. People who have certain jobs or areas they already know to cover. The organization part might just take less time when the next bargewide crisis comes around. This time? The unofficial security team did really well. But we never know what's coming next.

[She really just wants to lead and feel like a part of something again.] I'd really only want to assign a few people to patrol at different times. At least at first.

If it's something you want to do then there's nothing to stop you trying to organise it. I would happily volunteer to take a patrol and I know there are others who'll feel the same. Just...be prepared to be diplomatic if anyone starts digging for reasons to argue against it.

You should also know that Sexby, our previous head of security, had some problems with stress associated with the extra responsibility that may have been detrimental to his Inmate. I can't speak for his predecessor but I can't imagine it was an easy ride for Angel either.

Believe me when I say I've done stuff like this before. In a way that was much bigger than trying not to step on people's comfort-zones. End-of-the-world bigger. Not so good with the politics, though. Maybe I should get an adviser or something. [She's kidding.]

Thanks a lot. Really. You're Toshiko, right? And don't worry about the stress, it's-

[Elric looks bad. Really bad, like he's been in a massive fight and his wife has killed herself after getting transformed into a giant worm and he now has to finish this whole business of ending the world. Which is exactly what's been going on since last he and Buffy spoke. On his end, he's looking into an old Melnibonéan mirror that he found in the ruins of Immryr.]

Buffy? Is that you?

[This? Blows her mind. Buffy is shocked, excited, and unexpectedly emotional at the sudden appearance of Elric. She barely notices that he doesn't look well.]

Elric?! Oh my god. You're-

Yeah, it's me. You- You remember me? [She takes a breath.] Where are you?

The final.. [Her face falls into a knowledgeable frown at this new information. Now, Buffy is able to see the state he's in.. And a sudden burst of worry takes an edge over her surprised features. She's trying very hard to not make it too obvious, but it's impossible to contain it all.]

I'm fine. [She dismisses it easily. Why is he asking about her in a time like this? Buffy is able to sober her attitude to one of grim resolve.] This is it, then? The battle you told me about?
