That if your suit has short comings work around them. Find what you have to do with what you got and try to work it out. I have been in the same situation with other costumes I have worn and still made them fun. Right now we are in a ocean of fursuiters so standing out is a bit tough. I just recommend going out and trying to be active. Personally I think your suit looks just fine. Get involved in the variety show, make up your own skit and work to make a better show if you can.
As for JD, Remember he is just a dog, he has to do a lot more for attention. :)

The problem is that the issues I have with the suit are easy to see in photos and videos. Honestly, I wouldn't care if they were so minor that I could easily ignore them. But when I see them, I focus on them, and I can't un-see them. And I'll look for them in every photo and video (and check to see if I was successful at hiding them). And I'll become more aware of them. And I'll reach a point where I can't ignore them. :|
I have a couple temporary fixes in mind, but I don't know if they'll work out, and I'll have to spend money to get a definite answer.
As for the variety show... sure, I could do it, and I probably wouldn't say no if I was asked to be a part of a skit. But I'd need to get the suit fixed, first.
I have the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX; I use it for all of the fursuit shots. It's not a horrible lense, and it performs well enough. But I think I could do better by using the 1.4G. And hey, if I'm still not satisfied with the images after that, then I'll know it's time to step up to FX. The 35mm f/1.4G will be a bit wide on an FX camera, but I'd at least have a good lens to start with.
I'll be at AC and MFF. I've already started thinking about how I'll handle the AC photography. >:)

I agree that you should look into getting the 35mm lens. But I don't know what lenses you have right now.
Hope to see you at AC and MFF.
