Somewhere a clock is ticking.

Any thoughts?

Despite the fact that I have ALWAYS wanted to own a peugeot 206, I'm beginning to have second thoughts, mainly based on the fact that the mechanics seemed to think they were a nightmare.

So - of the little cars -
Peugeot 206
Toyota Yaris
Hyundai Getz
Ford Focus

of the slightly bigger cars -
Kia Rio (I know absolutely NOTHING about Kia ( Read more... )

My friend has a kia and says its great. Don't they come with 7 year warranties?

I love my qashqai and would reccommend it to anyone.

The qashqai seems to be out of my league - and a 4x4? Don't want a car that is much bigger than I have at the moment.

I don't have much experience with cars, but I did rent a little Toyota Yaris last year for a holiday, and I absolutely fell head-over-heels in love with the thing. It's now the car I want to own when I finally get into a position for owning one.

It was fantastic on fuel and fun to drive.

Thanks. I wondered if your Toyota experience might be of help!

I WAS looking at the Aygo, but the reviews seem to suggest it is quite small.

Mike had a Seat Leon for 18 months and sold it ASAP due to problems. Our friend over the road also has one and has just sold it due to problems (only an 06 reg) so I'd steer clear of Leons...!

The Focus shouldn't be in with the little cars - it's easily as big as a Leon or a Corolla. I was looking into buying a Focus when I bought my Mondeo (the same spec came out cheaper on the bigger car, for some reason), and similarly wanted to spend a similar amount.

I wouldn't bother with a diesel engine unless you cover a lot of miles each year, which I don't expect you do. With the Focus, the 1.6 petrol seems to be the one to go for. (And for that money you'd be looking at the previous version http://www.whatcar.co.uk/used-car-summary.aspx?RT=2591&type=1 )

I saw this post on lj uk but I'm not a member (yet) so I'll just reply here instead =)

It seems that no one has suggested VW to you at all. I love my 1.4 Turbo Diesel 2001 Polo. It's small enough to be classed as small, but not as small-crappy as the Lupo. It's also not as expensive as the Golf, but is still as sturdy as a rock.

The mpg is fantastic and the only thing to have gone wrong with it since it was built was the pipe leading to the rear windscreen washer got a hole in it and started leaking into the backseat, but that was easily fixed. VWs are known to last.

Also having £35 12 month road tax is nothing to scoff at as it has low emissions. It's also a relatively low insurance band. All in all it's been a very low-cost car to run, and for a diesel it still has some kick to it when needed, and really comfortable for nipping around town.
