Since the beginning of the year, we've been seriously talking about getting a dog.  It's been awhile since our beloved Koi passed and I think we're finally ready for one.  We knew we wanted to rescue a dog since there are so many out there that need good homes.  We came close to getting one adorable puppy but unfortunately it was adopted before we ( Read more... )

You are so smart to have reservations about this breed. And I'm speaking from experience since I have one for my very own (Maya). First, I strongly suggest you read through this website for tons of information on the breed ( ... )

Aren't they great? I know I certainly learned quite a bit from them. To think I started the dog search looking for a pug and ended up with Maya?! She won me over in an instant.

I couldn't agree more with everything Erin posted here. My sister has a lab pit mix (Charlie) and a pure pit (Sammy) and they are both totally different dogs. Charlie is great around everyone and would never hurt a fly, but Sammy can be very agressive to some people. My sister does not feel comfortable having him in the same room as her baby and has a really hard time finding anyone to look after him when they go away (you may remember that I posted about this a few weeks ago). They are both super sweet dogs, but Sammy is really hard to handle and I hate to say it, but I don't think my sister would have got him again if she could go back.
All dogs are different and it could be that the dog you are looking at is just like Charlie and will be the perfect companion for you guys.
Good luck and let us know what you decide!

I had a pure-breed(sp) pit bull named Red as a kid. The dog was from SPCA and had some major behavioral problems which my parents were aware of but thought they could correct with training and love. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case and the dog turned out to be a bit pyscho and very unsafe for my brother and I to be around as well as neighbors. It didn't help that most people in the neighborhood had pre-conceived ideas(understandably so) about the breed and the fact that Red was very agressive and did not follow direction only complicated matters. Eventually...the dog had to go to a new home because he was so crazy with us kids and the neighbors were raising hell about how unsafe they thought he was. My dad found someone who had a lot of acreage and could provide the dog with a large amount of space to run free without being around kids or people ( ... )
