I have been reading up and from what I can gather Dublin (where the job is) happens to be one of the most expensive cities in europe. More expensive than San Francisco, New York and LA. (not including home prices since I dont want to own ( Read more... )

Well they will need to up the offer quite a bit more. Imagine trying to live in NYC or San fran for 45k/year .... ack.

No need to be jealous yet schoolboy. ;-P

(look below for more relocation details)

I know nothing of ireland, but what a fantastic opportunity. Being the America-hater that I am, I'd be all over that. Especially if they pay to relocate you.

They are paying for my flight, 1 month of accomodations and 1 month salary as a reloation package. They are going to send me information about cost of living.

The catch being that Dublin is more expensive than NYC, or San francisco. Although I am sure I could 'live' on what their initial offer is, I doubt I would be happy.

Then the main question is: are you happy here? Are you in the mood for something new? You are young enough that if you went there and hated it, you could come back. Or use ireland as a stepping stone to anywhere in Europe. Once you establish visa or citizenship, you can work anywhere and gain higher salary.

*I* would go for it. I am adventurous.
Tell them to call me. I will go in your stead.

No. Yes. True.

I could use it has a stepping stone, I just dont want to slip and end up lost at sea.

I probably will go for it if they offer the storage position (see below for details). However I am leaning towards declining the server position since its less than what I make here in a much more expensive location. I'm adventurous, not silly.

They require Linux, Networking and Hardware diagnostic skills. If you have those then you might get a call (They either found me on monster or dice.)

...live outside of Dublin and commute via train?
Ask the company to assist in securing affordable housing for you, most have relocation programs that should be able to meet your needs and especially since you aren't local they really should offer this up as part of the "we want you" negotiations.

No. I fucking hate the burbs. Not to mention that from what I gather the area around work (and indeed, between work and downtown) is desolate. Mostly industrial parks and office buildings.

They are paying for my flight, 1 month of accomodations and 1 month salary as a reloation package. They are going to send me information about cost of living.

If the cost of living is as high in the area as I think it is, there is no way I am taking the job for 35k. It would leave me with around $300 to eat/live on after paying bills and transportation (assuming public transport, cars are WWAAAAY to expensive over there) which would make me incredibly broke and unable to enjoy europe at all.

Dublin is moved from #13 last year to #18 this year in the Rankings!

You should also consider the Guinness "Pint to Euro" ratio chart... important stuff. I also found This, but the dude wants $45 to access his "full site" of information. Part of it breaks down how to live off 30k industrial income, maybe it'd be worth a look.

If I find more info tonight at work I'll let you know.

Depends on the position. I have thus far only been offered the system engineer 2 position. The higher paying position is storage analyst which pays 45k euros/year. I have until tomorrow to answer about the system engineer position, I will probably not hear back about the storage position until early next week.

The pain in the ass is that I am moving this weekend. Which means if I turn down the system position (likely) and get the storage position (I would say ... unlikely due to lack of language skills) I will be out $1400.
