A couple of years ago, I was over at City Park playing in the interactive fountain. There was a big group of developmentally disabled teenagers playing in the fountain. They'd come on a couple of buses. My dog was watching in disgust from over by a bench. One of the kids asked me what bus I came on. I told him I didn't go to school because I was a grownup. He was surprised. One of their aides smiled at me and shrugged his shoulders. I laughed and we all kept playing.
I tried to make friends (a rarity for me at the time). The Down's kid was very nice. But every time I mentioned the most important things in my life - the SERI internship and girls - he got a blank look, got quiet, and sometimes started twitching. It almost made me want to hate myself.
