So a week or two ago K. dropped my iPod and did the little guy in. Once before it had consumed its own soul and I had to reinstall the software, but software won't take when the hard drive no longer understands that it's a hard drive. ...but that was before I knocked my K2000 out of commission by giving it one too many hearty whacks, in an effort to solve its "my LCD is unreadable because for some reason my power supply likes to freak out (and occasionally drop the pitch a semitone or so)" problem. Which I usually solve with a whacking.

But in this case, about half of the sounds promptly became crazy, glitched-out washes of static and randomly changing pitches. I tried repeated blows; some made it worse, some made it better again.

With my thesis due shortly, this was...problematic. You can't really write a harp part if it sounds like Hrvatski is your harpist.

Fortunately, I opened 'er up, wiggled and reseated some of the cards, and presto, back in business. Turned out the orchestral ROM block had come a fraction loose.

Then again, none of this really violates your basic thesis: if it really isn't working, and you can't afford to get it fixed, give it a whack! An approach that, in truth, works great with my old cheap phone, whenever it decides that the ( ... )
