odd socks

why is it that after washing my clothes, i always end up with odd socks? the pile is growing by the day with more and more exotic variations of sock appearing from no-where. no matter how hard i try these evil beasts refuse to match up!

I have a similar issue. I have 3 individual socks, none of which match any of the others... Where do their friends go?
