Firion first finds him floating face-down in the shallow coastal waters south of Cornelia Plains.
"Hey!" He shouts, scrabbling down the rocky cliff. "Are you alright?"
The body does not stir.
"Hey!" Firion tries again, splashing towards him. He gives an ear-splitting whistle, hoping that this half-drowned (or fully drowned, but Firion's trying to stay positive) person might just rouse from the sheer annoyance of the sound.
The whistle produces astonishingly swift results. The mystery boy shoots upright with a large gasp, sending a small wave to lap against Firion's waist. Firion notes absently that it will take forever to clean the sand out of his armor. "Yuna," he pants out, eyes rolling to the back of his head. Then he passes out again.
Firion paddles over, more than ever aware of the extra weight of his weapons dragging him down. He yanks the boy's face out of the water and shakes him. "Please stay awake," he commands nervously.
Yuna (is that his name?) does not respond. Firion places two fingers to the base of his neck and oh--a relief, Yuna is still alive. Firion turns around and eyes the small climb he has before he can deposit Yuna onto safe land. Well, at least he's not dragging a corpse.
Several scrapes and bruises later, Firion and Yuna are sprawled out on a grassy field. Thankfully, there aren't any manikins here and Firion contents himself with relaxing.
This is, of course, when Yuna shoots up and clocks Firion in the jaw with his head in the process. "Agh," Firion chokes out, falling flat on his back.
"Ow! Oh, jeez--sorry, dude..." Yuna fumbles uselessly with his hands, as if he is reaching for something, before settling on patting Firion's shoulder. "You okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine." Firion wheezes out, and after a rueful second rubbing his jaw, sits up. "And you--Yuna, right?"
Yuna gives him an odd look. "Uh, no. I'm Tidus."
Oh. Well. "When I found you in the water, that's the name you said," Firion explains, unconsciously rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment, "so I figured it was yours."
"Do I look like a girl to you?" Yuna--Tidus shoots back.
"Why--why would that matter?" Firion is baffled.
"Huh. I dunno. Just seems like," Tidus pauses, as if searching for the words, "if I had the name Yuna, I would be a girl. You know?"
Firion shrugs.
"So. Where are we? And who are you?"
"Ah, right." Firion nods. This is a topic he knows something about. "I'm Firion. This place--apparently we've been summoned by this goddess, Cosmos. And we have to fight to end a war between her and the god Chaos. We should head back to Order's Sanctuary--that's where Cosmos and the rest of the warriors are."
Tidus seems to ponder this for a moment. "Well, it's something to do I guess. And you don't seem like a bad guy." He frowns momentarily. "If you were a bad guy, you'd have pigtails or something."
Firion isn't as caught off-guard the second time Tidus mentions something like this. "Right," he acquiesces.
"Okay, so then let's go! First thing I'm gonna do is complain to this Cosmos lady. If she really wanted us to fight for her, shouldn't she have summoned me not in a pool of water?" Tidus stands up and dusts himself off. "C'mon, Firion, let's go!"
Tidus doesn't wait for a response and takes off running, whooping at the feeling of the breeze. Firion has a horrible premonition that he is going to spend a lot of time in the following battle trying to keep up with him.
