I disagree, I think they were a really good blues rock band. You really have to understand it more mikey. Next time we hang out I will let you listen to their good songs.
i have listened to many led zeppelin songs. i think there are maybe three that i consider "good." probably, you will make me listen to one of these three songs and i will be like, "yeah but i hate them. sorry."
i just don't have respect for a band that rips off chess records so heartlessly and never ONCE even comes close to admitting it. fucking douchebags.
a lot of the progressions and stuff and sometimes the solos in zeppelin songs are pretty much lifted note-for-note from chess records artists (e.g. bo diddley, howlin' wolf,) even though they're maybe run through a different kind of process so that you might not pick up on it right away. everybody calls led zeppelin a "blues rock band," wellllll..that might be true, since they were stealing riffs and stuff from classic blues musicians and getting away with it.
that's mostly my point. they, uh, "borrowed" techniques and pieces of music from all over the place, but my biggest gripe has always been the thing with chess--i mean, can you be any more arrogant, than to think it's okay to do that?
no, no. i can completely acknowledge that r.e.m.'s not for everybody. i've got a bunch of their stuff and i like it a lot when i'm in the mood for it, but i can completely see where someone wouldn't at all. barring my own opinions on their importance, etc., i can still admit that it's not for everybody and wouldn't write somebody's musical opinions off based solely on that. i was just saying that based on her musical taste i'd think she'd like r.e.m., too. that's why i said it throws me.
i can get behind a "fuck U2!" party line because they put out two good records (october and boy) and then turned into untolerable bullshit. so, hooray!
