“Mir! Look what I got for you!!!”
Lee Joon walked across the dorm towards Mir who was comfortably sprawled on the couch sucking on a lollipop. Upon hearing Lee Joon’s words, as if he had just realized he was sitting on a bed of needles, Mir shot up from his seat and ran towards his hyung.
“HYUUUUUUNNNG~ You came home already! How was the carnival? Did you do many things? What games did you play? Did you get me something? I always wanted to go to a carnival! Why did you not invite me! Nevermind we can…”
Lee Joon frowned at Mir to shut him up. It was necessary, otherwise Mir would have asked a billion and one questions. The effect was instantaneous. Mir re-plugged the lollipop into his mouth and resumed silence.
“Jja-jjang!!!” Lee Joon pulled out a white bun plushie from behind. “I got you this when I won the horse racing game in the carnival. I don’t play with things like this so I thought you might like it.”
“HYUUUUUNGGGGG!!!!” Mir took the bun and as though he had tears in his eyes, he choked out an emotional, “Thank you… Can I name it?”
“Uh-sure, what you gonna call it?” Joon asked nonchalantly, though in his heart there was only one answer he wanted to hear.
Mir held the bun with both hands outstretched in front of him, and scrounged up his nose, scrutinizing the plushie.
“How about Joonie?” Mir finally concluded, smiling widely as though extremely pleased with his name choice.
Joon stifled a smirk.
“But you called the killer whale and the bunny Joonie already!”
“But that was the killer whales’ first name and the bunny’s last name! This shall be the bun’s middle name! Shiroii Joonie Bun the first!”
Joon could not help but laugh to himself as he retired into his room, leaving behind Mir who was happily playing with his new toy.

Byunghee had just finished his studio recording when he returned to the dormitory. It was snowing heavily outside and his brown Burberry trench coat was covered in frost. He pulled the beanie off his Mohawk and kicked the snow off his shoes at the doorway. As he turned around, there was Mir, standing right behind him tightly clutching what looked like a piece of… white dung?
“HYUNG! Look!!! Joon-hyunggie gave this to me! It’s called Shiroii Joonnie Bun the first!” Mir shoved the bun into G.O’s face with great enthusiasm and bounced about happily.
G.O could not help but feel slightly… jealous? Given, Mir had named the toy cat, monkey and porcupine after him, by using his real name Byunghee, but he still could not fight the feeling.
“Hyung?” asked Mir as he continued to play with his bun, making weird faces at it. “Can we go to the fair? I’ve never been to one and Joon hyung won’t bring me!”
G.O was dying to agree but he knew that his enthusiasm may come off as being too forward... and also, there was that other thing. Mir had terrible anxiety attacks when he was in a crowd, which was why he knew Joon never brought him out in the first place. It was an unspoken agreement to protect Mir from getting worked up between the members of MBLAQ (Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality) so Mir remained home most of the time unless he had schedules, professional stuff.
“Please hyung!!!” Mir looked through his black-framed glasses with puppy-dog eyes-a look no human could possibly resist.
“Well---”
“Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease--”
“Oh alright.” Ah screw it. He deserves to go out once in a while. “Hmm, but the weather is terrible! Shall we go to an ice-skating rink then?”
~
It was dark outside and the breeze was cutting against the cheek. But Mir continued his never-ending hype and hastily pulled on his skates.
It was a public lake that had frozen over and hardly anyone was around.
G.O followed Mir onto the rink and skated slowly behind him, watching his every move carefully just in case he slipped-No. He wouldn’t.
“Hyungie! Look at me!” Mir accelerated as he gained confidence with every yard that he covered.
He had been a trainee since middle school and prior to that, well, he did not have much of a social life. With a famous sister, even he could not have ‘real’ friends that he could go out with. G.O started to worry for the boy. What if he slipped-no, he wouldn’t. How could such a thing cross his mind? Yet the hyung could not help but shout a simple, “Mir! Be careful!” as he followed closely behind the boy.
Mir suddenly stopped and wheeled around to face G.O. His face was solemn.
“Hyung… Tag! You’re it!”
G.O completely caught by surprise and his intense competitive desire set off in pursuit of the boy.
“Yah! You little… Come here!”
It was really something to see two grown men chasing each other on the ice, punctuated with sudden shouts where Mir occasionally lost his balance.
~
In exhaustion, Mir planted himself on the cold ice in the middle of the lake and G.O followed suit, leaning on his dongsaeng.
“That was fuuuunnnnn~ Thank you hyung!”
G.O smiled. He did good:D
Suddenly, flashes of white light surrounded the two. Reporters crowded around them taking pictures of the new idols. (How they got to be in the centre of the lake we’d never know)
G.O immediately held up his arm to shield Mir from the blinding flashes, while he squinted to block the light from blinding himself. He stood up and proceeded to pull Mir off the ground.
But he did not budge.
“Mir? MIR!”
Mir had started to go into convulsions.
The flashes got more frequent.
And Mir’s medicine was left in the dorm.
Genius. Utter genius. Joon is going to screw you ten times over.
“MOVE.” G.O picked up Mir and skated to hard ground, leaving the flashes fading away into the background.
~
“Where is he!” Joon, Seungho and Cheondung entered the room.
Joon was in a rage.
“You knew he’d get into one of his epileptic fits and you still went ahead to bring him out! Are you an idiot?”
Seungho stepped in to try and smoothen out the situation, though he knew a lost cause when he saw one. “Joon, please, let Mir rest.” He was referring to the man that lay fast asleep on the hospital bed, with a drip attached to his wrist.
Joon shut up. Not before he threw a dirty look at G.O.
“Hey, I did not know this would happen okay? Yeah it’s my fault but the lake was never that crowded and we all know that! We went there when we were trainees. It was just those reporters…”
“Yeah Hyung, besides, you know Mir was getting restless. He needs to go out too.” Cheondung added in his two-cents worth.
Joon’s breathing got lighter.
“You can’t protect me forever hyung.” Mir had awoken due to the noise.
Though his back was turned to the hyungs, the sobs were not disguised as he spoke those words. He knew that his hyungs had been watching over him, protecting him, but he felt like a burden and he hated being trapped.
Who says I can’t protect you forever?
