Some friends of mine have recently made mention of a variation of "some bad and painful thing not quite on the level of a tragedy happened, consequently I must drink the pain away." This leads me to a question:

Does that ever actually work?

Alcohol being a depressant, it won't likely make you feel any better by itself. But if consumed in company, even the company of strangers, it also reduces inhibitions allowing someone to offload baggage that they may not have been able to without it.

I was just thinking of that today - my plan is to avoid people and drinking situations at least for another week or two, because I probably would be a morose drunk.

i agree that drinking when i'm already in a morose mood leads to worse thoughts, not to mention the added baggage of a hangover the next day forcing me to contemplate my reasons for drinking even further, only this time while under more stress.
