Congratulations! I can relate to this bit of horror. We tried to squish a 33 inch wide couch through a 30 inch door . . . and had to rip the thing apart in order to accomplish this goal. Like you, I also did the damp sponge trick . . . and also had raw knuckles after the whole thing was said and done. Blah.

Oh believe me, my eyes were welled with tears! Not only was I so frustrated about getting the couch in, but then seeing the paint and scuff marks all over it, and dealing with Cory being a grouch. Agh. Those were a bad few hours, but then I went to Target and bought some stuff so that cheered me up a little. :)
