Bypassing the metaphor and thinking from a purely literal, scientific viewpoint (as I so typically do, often to a fault), I think maybe beetles can still expel when upside down. Perhaps that means there's still a little trickle of hope. I mean, maybe if a beetle were to poop enough into a pile, he'd have something to grab one of his little legs onto and flip himself over. A little ingenuity. Repurposing old shit into something useful.
