two things today.

first on the agenda, kw34hd1 was suspended permanently due to an "offensive" icon used on bradfitz's relatively new project, OpenID. i'll let sneak's explain since he knows the situation better:

the reasoning being this: if you break the TOS (such as with a prohibited user icon), are initially suspended, comply with their request to modify the ( Read more... )

to their credit, i _was_ using the icon on livejournal.

openids do not have icons associated with them.

I'd like to know how livejournal even knows who users are in order to ban all accounts they have.

Email is out because you can easily set up a free email account anywhere and register with that.

IPs are out because they can change, be spoofed, etc.

They use emails, but they're pretty broad about it. When I was permabanned (also, I thought they didn't do that anymore, wtf), they suspended every account that had ever used an address at my domain.
