SO. Io was my first character, and way back when, I didn't know anything about making decent icons. SO A GOOD NUMBER OF HER ICONS ARE JUST PLAIN CROPS AND RESIZES, except the ones Pell cleaned up for me ♥ And HanaKimi scanlations aren't exactly the cleanest scans ever ( Read more... )

I AM A FAN OF THE LITTLE COLOR WITH PATTERN

I would say be cautious with your patterns if you're going with patterns, because they sometimes can make an icon too "busy" which draws the focus away from the character!

I agree with Yuki that the gradient is a bit too bright, but maybe if you desaturated the color you're using a bit to dull it out or potentially apply your color layer only to the blacks on the icon using the Channels window you could then use a more subdued color for the gradient.

(I'm redoing Tokitoh's icons like that, actually, the result is something like this where there's a desaturated purple over the blacks only and a olive-green-yellow color beneath it and over the gradient)

But yes, those are my thoughts. Icons r srs business

What do you think of this attempt at the gradient?

I like the more subtle gradient a lot better! I'd say it's my favorite out of all of them. o/

I LIKE ONE AND FOUR, s-suggestions:

For one, yeah, it's a little bright but I don't mind it so much. Mostly, I think you could probably tweak the gradient a bit to make it a different shade of purple so it doesn't become too distracting? Akiha's gradient is a little darker/more orange than his color layer, and then the opacity is set to 60% so that it doesn't steal protagonism away from the characters.

Fouuur, I like, but I'd like to see a biiiit more color? Because right now you can only see it if you squint. And yeah, what Kakeru said about the patterns making icons busy. Maybe if you lower the opacity on them a little, too?

MY TWO CENTS.

OHHH, I LIKE THE ONE AT THE BOTTOM TOO. The tone, mostly. Is it the monochrome gradient style too? Because if not, I think you should try it with that, it's a really nice shade.

On that one I played around with the channel mixer... But I forgot to note somewhere what percentages I left it on! I have to play around until I figure out what I had it on, because I think I like that method the best myself.

Out of curiousity, how are you cropping and resizing these?

I agree with Kakeru that you should be careful with patterns so they don't get too busy and take the focus away from her. I think the pattern you have in the third one is just beginning to do that-- but not quite there yet?

I like the gradient, but I think it's also too bright-- the alternate you have down there is better.

Cropping and resizing in photoshop, with the crop tool and the image size options. Except that I think... 2 of those? I uploaded the files i hadn't resized yet, and was lazy and just resized them in photobucket (like the one i added on, for example.)

Oh, okay. I just noticed that a couple of them had some really choppy, jaged lines-- which you can change by using different options in your resize options, btw.

Really? I'm having trouble resizing a couple without winding up with jagged lines here and there. What options should I play with?
