Daniel glances over at their temporary teammate. Vala’s loss still aches sharply in his chest and he’s almost numb after all that has happened in the last months. The Ori are here on Earth despite everything the SGC had thrown at them. SG-1 had heard through the underground that Torchwood had a weapon that could take out the ship currently orbiting the planet. Vala had been killed en route to Cardiff.

Her loss meant they were one team member down and they really needed a four person team - Sam was still in Atlantis - had been ordered in fact to stay away from Earth completely. The problem was that this was a suicide mission in all but name. Cam had had the misfortune of having to inform Captain Harkness of their need.

Flashback “With Vala… dead, we need one more if we’re going to have any chance of destroying that Ori ship.” He locked eyes with the Captain, who slowly nodded, his arms folded

“But surely someone else?” It’s not that Daniel doesn’t think Ianto can do the task he must, it’s that he’s young and less comfortable with a weapon than anyone else at Torchwood - that had been more than clear in the way he handled the weapons in the skirmish that had taken Vala’s life

Okay, I don't know Torchwood at all, but ouch. and such a concept that doesn't quite fit with Daniel's mental framework, even with all the time he's spent around the military.

Yeah.. there is a lot of TW subtext in this one. I think in some ways Ianto and Daniel are alike - in the preservation of the past, in the seeking of knowledge. But at the same time, where Daniel constantly fights and pushes, Ianto is very controlled and does what needs to be done or does what he is asked to do. Duty is important to Ianto, and he will die for it whereas SG-1 will die because they need to try and stop the Ori. I also think that duty underlies what they all do, it is just not framed in that way.

The great thing about this, btw, is that I now have an idea for a fic that will expand on this.

Interestingly done, I like the interaction you have going between the SGC and TW 3 and the idea of Ianto being the brave one to sacrifice all. However you might want to have certain aspects of this "Britpicked." As far as I know, I don't think people get the same types of diplomas in the UK that they do in the US (BA, Masters, Ph D.), also you might want to pause on this and take certain character developments which happened in the latest episodes of Torchwood into consideration.

At the time this was written none of Ianto's educational history was known. If I ever do decide to expand on this idea, I will likely take the information revealed in Fragments into consideration. The ficlet mainly grew out of my desire to have Daniel and Ianto in the same universe. As this was a comment fic, I did not have the time to get it betaed or britpicked. Again, should I ever decide to expand on this idea, it will be greatly revamped and go through a thorough beta and britpick process.

Even with everything that has happened? More of the bitter than sweet. Its wonderfully done and sharper for me because I started off disliking Gwen, and then came to loathe her.

Thank you for your comment. I've mentioned in some story notes on my AO3 account for this that I had/have plans for this. I'm hoping, one day, to write an apocofic and well...

a lot of the impetus for this was my dissatisfaction with the Gwen-Jack relationship as portrayed on the show/in the audiobooks. And honestly? even now, I'm not sure whether Jack wouldn't sacrifice Ianto if it meant saving Gwen. And yes, very, very bitter. Which was the point, I think.
