I think you should be able to save without a bed? Just talk to your little gyroid dude in front of your house.

If you have the ds version, there is a bed in the attic. When you first go into your house, immediately go up the stairs to the left to find it.

If you have the gamecube version, there is a little tree thing in front of your house. Talk to it to save.

I believe there is a ghost that you can talk to between the hours of 12-4am

You can't see him, but he will tell you to get 5 spirits. They are kinda see-through blue things and you have to catch them with your net. Then go back to where the ghost was and you can talk to him.

I haven't done it myself, but I'd like to hear about it if you talk to him!

If you're talking about Animal Crossing for Game Cube - something I found out recently - you can advance the clock. It's one of the options before they reload the town. You can change the date and the time - I advanced mine so I didn't have to wait on my fruit to grow. Of course I wasn't thinking and now my town is covered in weeds and I missed my monthly raffle.
