Need garb help

Jun 10, 2008 00:06

Ok so I have some friends who are new to the SCA. They want to do things "right" but are on a super tight budget. Anyway, this is what her husband is wanting. I've never seen "shorts" like this... or is it a tunic with a deep v in the front? http://www.conservapedia.com/Image ( Read more... )

shorts = not exists....probably :)

Regular pants = not exist

The garments for the lower leg that DO exist = hose and brais for men , for sure (and the brais do KINDA look like shorts, but not that kind of shorts), OR VERY early funky pants with a gore in the crotch.

I'm still making generic pants for the boys most of the time because medieval pants for the most part include diaper-butt issues they are alarmed about. Some of them are fine with that concept, others are NOT ;)

I think this is a redrawing mistake. The original garment was probably a knee length tunic split for horseback riding. http://www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/garments/Moselund/Moselund.html

I've seen that picture/article set out on the web before, but can't say I've noticed shorts discussed anywhere else. I suspect you're correct about the deep v - the artist misinterpreted something somewhere. Plus, the first sentence is "The clothing of Pre-Norman England was very simple, existing primarily for protection and warmth with little or no interest in fashion." I think that's pretty iffy ( ... )
