Well, I was being sad at the dearth of neurodivergent heroes in mainstream fiction, and how I'm having to content myself with Matt Parkman's dyslexia (with which I can't really empathize much, being mildly hyperlexic.)

I was also, like some other people, rather annoyed by parts of War Buddies, specifically the bit where Hana obtains a false ( Read more... )

I never thought about that at all, I'll admit. But it makes sense, and it gives (new depth? or something like) to her character when you think about it. Cool idea. :D

Yay friend!ressurrection!

I haven't had an answer to the Peter one, but I might ask this one anyway. Who knows.

And I have Asperger's, which is a) how I know about it and b) why I was looking for it in the first place. And, you know, it doesn't even matter if they deliberately played the subtext this way; as long as they consistently characterize her as bright, unsociable, and a little subtler than most car alarms, I really don't care what they call it; she's still Someone Like Me.

Another thing that occurred to me while reading was that once again we have abilities that are closely connected to the character of the hero because Hana's abilities deal with machines and messages and not people directly. Would you consider that something that would validate the Asperger's theory?

It also kind of fits with hyperlexia; she's getting the Internet's text, rather than having to deal with inconvenient spoken language. And with IM/text message, she can essentially write at the speed at which she would be able to speak; possibly even faster.

Of course, she could still have the same power as a neurotypical- she's got a codebreaking talent. Of course, that's part of it... if you excise all the AS traits? Well, you'd still have the vengeance thing, which seems to lend itself to a more destructive power. Niki at best, Ted at worst, I think.

Well well do I suddenly sense that you have found a female Hero character to keep Eden company in the land of kick-ass awesomeness? In the GNs I found Hana quite resourcefull and cool ( ... )

Wow- I really like that. Way to take something that could be a horrendous misuse of another female character (which, let's face it, seems to happen more often than not) and instead see a deeper, far better reason for it.

For some reason, Heroes has a way of making me hate every female character (minus Kimiko, who's in one episode? Two?) so I far prefer your ideas. Especially since they make so much sense.

And general badassery? Always a plus.

Heee. Gotta love fanwanking.

Aw, thanks. It may be a factor of feeling guilty for disliking FCs, but I'm still glad to be able to do it.

Of course, now we need to get Hana to actually be, you know, onscreen.

And there needs to be more fic with Candace as the villain, for the reasons I've already said...

That's an interesting point. I keep thinking i ought to read the not-TV bits of Heroes and never get around to it, though...

Incidentally, what's a hyperlexic when one's at home?

They can get pretty cheesy sometimes, but I think they're worth it.

And hyperlexia just means being very good at reading and writing, while being below average with spoken language. Extreme cases can't speak at all; I'm nowhere near there.

Huh, that's interesting. I've never heard of it.

I only did recently, while Wikipedia'ing AS. It kind of explained a couple things, though.
