because you can't know everything

I know you're surely tired of long, detailed, linear-reading-required entries. Everyone's attention span is so much shorter nowadays ( Read more... )

Pffft, the NSA is just butthurt I'm making fun of them this week. Of course, they knew I was making fun of them before I even linked my post to the topic thread, but that's beside the point.

Also, this?
They say that by 2080, the worldwide consequences of global warming will make it very difficult to grow coffee anywhere on the planet.

One of the most terrifying things I've ever read online. If activists wanna really get people motivated to fight global warming, they need to drop all this "Save the whales" shit and hit people where it counts - CAFFEINE. There's no wakeup call like realizing our liquid wakeup call drinking days may, in fact, be numbered.

Srsly bro, I totally dig this post, combination of wise words and cynical fuckery that it is - and the two are not remotely mutually exclusive.

You do of course realize that I posted my entry in the topic thread seven minutes before you posted yours. HOW DID HE KNOW???

I'm not saying I'm actually in the NSA or anything ( ... )

I'm starting to think that you just might have some sort of uncanny bad luck when it comes to exploding/incendiary incidents.

And that I should be careful not to leave the house when batteries are recharging.

It's true that in the larger scheme of time, very little that we do matters... and also true that it needs to matter to US. It seems contradictory, but without assigning meaning to things our lives would be too depressing to be worth living!

Yeah, well, my life ain't exactly a Die Hard movie. Sure, I've seen my share of electronics go up in literal smoke in front of me, but that's what you get when you fetishize vintage (and frequently faulty) gear of the 60s and 70s.

And this is much less likely with the sorts of batteries you find in laptops and cell phones than with the type that actually exploded in front of me. Still, it is always a possibility with any kind of li-ion - and it gives me pause about buying such batteries from Hong Kong off eBay for sure.

I had always laughed at people I'd seen detailing their "blast box" plans online - building huge bunkers on their patio in which they plugged in their laptops and cell phones every night, etc. I probably still won't go to that length, even though I'd kind of like to now. But I am definitely going to a surplus store today to buy an ammo box in which to charge these smaller, internal-electronics-free, less-well-managed types of LI batteries. I found way too many forum threads of identical incidents with these types ( ... )

So interesting to follow the twists and turns through your mind!

It wasn't a direct dump, and also wasn't written anywhere near linearly. If you saw the actual real-time thought rollercoaster, it'd be a lot more frightening, and also a lot more unreadable (maybe).

Thanks for stoppin' in.

I've read several such accounts of li-ion batteries either exploding, or else heating that much during charging that they cause severe burns when picking up or cause housefires. A while ago there was a warning going around in the papers not to charge stuff when no one is around or during the night. I mean, if it's that rare, why are we no longer considering these things as freak accidents and move on. Guess this is another of those "oops" moments after we've widely spread some sort of technology and didn't really look at side-effects (or knowingly ignored them cause too much money went into research and not enough came in through patents and sales ( ... )

Good point: your entry had killing, and mine had a mass-scale cultural craze for repeated anal penetration. I guess one possible read is that LJI is much more American in orientation than I realized, because the LJI voters were clearly more in favor of murder and violence vs. takin' it up the butt ( ... )
