The problem you are having is that you lack perspective. It might SEEM like they were running away from a lava flow that was just a hundred feet behind them, but really it was way off. At least that's what I tell myself cause that bugged me too. But in the end its still Doctor Who and it makes me happy.
Even if they somehow survived being blown miles away, Pompeii's pyroclastic flow was extremely huge and extremely fast, and they can go like 35,000 feet a minute. D:
