Hmm.. maybe because the classic anime has a clearer line between good and bad? I mean, I've never seen Voltes V, but could it be it has something to do with character's complexity?

Hmmmm... in some classic mecha anime, probably yes; but in Voltes V it's more complex than that. Granted, some antagonists are rrrreallly bad (oh those aliens!), but there are some other (like Heinell) who have other sides to them that you cannot help but pitying/relating with them.

But yeah, probably the simplicity of said anime is also a blessing for people who are tired of anime that try too hard to be complex/dark/complicated etc.
