Jin was not going to gloat. Definitely not. He wasn't a kid anymore, after all; he was totally above that sort of thing.

Kamenashi looked up from up from the message he'd been punching on his cell. "So what did Johnny want?"

Jin shrugged. "Oh, nothing much," he said as nonchalantly as he could manage.

"Oh. Okay," Kamenashi said indifferently, and turned his attention back to his phone.

"Just a side project, that's all," Jin added. Kamenashi nodded absently. "With Pi."

Kamenashi looked up sharply. "What?"

Before Jin could answer the sudio door banged open and Yamapi burst in, making a beeline for Jin. "JinJinJinJinJinohmygoshyouheardright?"

Jin knew he was grinning like an idiot and didn't care. "Yeah! This is so freaking cool! We're going be the best-selling unit ever!"

Yamapi assumed a mock-serious expression and pretended to hold up a microphone. "In a surprising and unexpected - although not unprecedented - move, today Johnny’s Jimusho announced the formation of a new special unit."

"Based on their lead roles in the hot new drama 'Tokyo Shinobi 2020'," Jin took over, "the unit will consist of two of the agency’s most popular young idols."

"KAT-TUN's Akanishi Jin - "

"NewS' Yamashita Tomohisa - "

" - together, TAY*J!" they finished in unison. Yamapi grabbed each Jin's hands and they jumped up and down, making high-pitched noises that an uncharitable person might call squeals.

"Wait, wait, wait! Lift me," Yamapi commanded. Jin stooped so Pi could clamber on his back. Then he hooked his arms under Pi's legs and they made a victory lap around the room, Pi holding his arms out like wings, both of them laughing hysterically.

Kamenashi stood up so abruptly that his chair clattered. "Well," he said stiffly, "I have an appointment. See you later."

"Aw, don't worry, I still love you, Shu--ji-kun!" Yamapi wheedled, but then Jin stumbled and Pi had lean forward quickly and wrap his arms around Jin’s neck for balance, giggling.

Jin, very maturely, smirked at Kamenashi.

Kamenashi glared at him and stalked out of the room.

"Night Escape", TAY*J's debut single, wasn't another "Seishun Amigo", but it sold over 300,000 copies in the first week, placing it solidly at No. 1 on the Oricon charts. The second week it sold almost 150,000; the third, 150,000 more. Jin and Yamapi performed on Music Station and Utawara each week and sat next to each other in the audience, leaning over to make low-voiced comments in each others' ears and then quickly muffle their laughter behind a hand. They showed up on Hey Hey Hey! and teased each other as much as Matsumoto and Hamaguchi did, with huge, stupid grins on their faces. They performed the dance routines with extra flourish, adding a crossover here, a synchronized hip roll there, high-fiving each other when the song was over. Anyone could see that, despite their suddenly heavy schedules, they were having the time of their lives.

Kamenashi became more and more irritable, stomping around the studio and snapping people's heads off for innocuous comments like "Did you see that one program last night?" When Nakamaru asked him why he was sulking, he said he wasn't sulking, and didn't Nakamaru think all the new dramas this season were idiotic?

The third week on Utawara, the blue and violet lighting came up, the smoke cleared from the stage to reveal Jin and Yamapi in their black and silver outfits, and then a familiar guitar line came up and they proceeded to perform "Seishun Amigo" to gales of laughter from the audience. Jin jumped off the stage and pulled over Wada Akiko to take Nakajima Yuuto's role during the bridge; the camera zoomed in on Matsumoto Jun laughing so hard there were tears in his eyes.

Kamenashi, sitting with the rest of KAT-TUN, looked ready to kill someone with his bare hands.

The final straw was their fourth appearance on Music Station. During the talk after their performance (in which they had winked at the fans and then at each other, drawing even more screams), the host asked what it was like working as a special unit, how it was different from working with their own groups.

"Well, I was in a similar special unit with Kamenashi-kun before, so it's not completely new," Yamapi began. "But it's a little different this time. We've been good friends for a long time, so it's really great to be able to work together at last."

"Of course we're working hard," Jin broke in, "but we're having a lot of fun no matter what we're doing, even if it's just something like waiting backstage. Actually, I'd say it's as much fun as it is work." Yamapi nodded in agreement.

"So even though you spend so much time together now, between the drama and TAY*J activities, you don't get into fights, or get on each others' nerves?" the host persisted.

Yamapi smiled. "Well, we've been friends for a long time."

He looped an arm around Jin's shoulders and squeezed; Jin laughed and returned the favor. The fans, of course, screamed.

Jin came into to work the next day whistling. Nakamaru met him near the door and said in a low voice, "Better watch out today, Kame's in an awful mood."

"Isn't he always?" Jin said with a smile to show he was kidding, hanging up his jacket.

"Sure seems like it lately," Nakamaru muttered. He crossed his arms and looked at Jin pointedly. "And don't think I don't know why, either."

Jin widened his eyes in mock-innocence. "I'm not sure what you mean," he said, pursing his lips to keep a tell-tale grin from escaping.

"I'm not saying he wasn't asking for it, but think about the rest of us, will you?" Nakamaru said, clapping a hand on Jin's shoulder. "We have to work with him, too."

Jin didn't trust himself to say anything, so he just nodded, straight-faced. Nakamaru, undeceived, sighed and walked away, shaking his head.

Jin proceeded to the dressing room, whistling again. He broke into song as he opened the door, belting out "Kimi e no NIGHT ESCAPE - ", when a hand grabbed his arm and yanked him around, and he was face-to-face with Kamenashi.

"Will you just shut up?" Kamenashi growled, and kissed him hard.

Huh? Jin thought, bewildered, and then Oh. That's nice.

Kamenashi was the one to break the kiss. "I hate that song," he said, breathing hard.

"Okay. Don't stop now," Jin said against Kamenashi's mouth, and slid a hand up the line of Kamenashi's back.

Kamenashi didn't take much convincing.

Jin could feel Kamenashi's hand tangled in his hair; it was going to be hopelessly mussed. Kamenashi tasted good and felt even better under Jin's hands, and Jin had no idea why he was suddenly privy to this knowledge but he wasn't going to complain. Then Kamenashi made a demanding noise deep in his throat, and Jin suddenly had an intense desire to find a convenient closet and see what other sounds he could get Kamenashi to make.

They broke apart to catch their breath. "What are we doing?" Jin murmured.

Kamenashi stared at him. "I thought it was pretty obvious."

"No, I mean, why now? I didn't even know you - I mean, I thought you were - " really jealous of my new project " - kind of mad at me."

Now Kamenashi looked away. His cheeks were suspiciously red. "Not exactly," he muttered.

Jin frowned. He was honestly confused. If it wasn't the single, then what on earth was it? "But you're always glaring at me and Yamapi, and you get mad whenever anyone talks about TAY*J - "

Kamenashi turned redder. "So?"

"So aren't you jealous that now I have a solo project with Pi, too?"

Kamenashi's head snapped back around. "What?" he said incredulously.

"I thought that, you know, you were mad that I was getting the same type of major project as you, and now I would be with Pi all the time and he wouldn't have any time for..." Jin trailed off as Kamenashi actually laughed.

"I think you're projecting, Akanishi," he said, raising an eyebrow and half-smiling. "Those are your issues, not mine."

"Then what was it?" Jin persisted.

Kamenashi didn't answer.

"Ka - me," Jin said plaintively, surprised at how easily the nickname slipped out. "Kaaaaame."

"You just - you keep touching each other," Kamenashi said finally.

Jin gaped. "What?"

"Shut up," Kamenashi said, embarrassed. "Can we stop talking now?"

"But - I thought for sure - I mean - "

Kamenashi rolled his eyes. "Good thing I don't want you for your brain," he said, and pulled Jin down to kiss him again.

Jin didn't stop him. After all, he wasn't actually stupid.
