And the demon shoved past Vulpes without a word; if he was at all pleased to find Jack still in one piece, it was well hidden under the irritation that hadn't left him since that morning, his expression hard as he looked the mage over.

It didn't surprise him in the least where they eventually found the mage. Though Belial did have to admit that he was a little impressed to find that, unlike previous times the demon had found the man lounging in the back of some dank, dirty alley, Jack still looked entirely sober. Little Petunia certainly had done a fine job of cleaning the boy up.

Sober was all he seemed to have going for him right now, though. "You really do look like shit, Winter."

As far as hallucinations went (as Jack refused to believe that the current bane of his existence and some surly-looking bloke had walked into his alley; of all the alleys in all the dirty districts, why his?) this one had a spot pretty high up on the "crazy shit just got real" list. Short of throwing himself against the wall until embraced by sweet unconsciousness, his options were rather limited. If anyone out there in the great wide world had any shred of mercy for him, it would be a hallucination. Maybe even a hallucination brought on by a stroke or some similar malfunction inside of his much-rattled head ( ... )

Well, that smirk was only a little odd. But it confirmed that his mage was perfectly fine after all, and the demon returned it in kind. None of the usual smugness was there, no, but the tolerant amusement, that familiar impression that he was patiently indulging an especially petulant child was still there ( ... )
