Summary: Where have Lily's favorite wind chimes gone?

"Mum?" Lily Potter throws the back door open with a very loud bang, stumbling through the halls until she stands, quite breathless, in the doorway to the kitchen. "Mum, what's happened to our wind chimes?"

Ginny looks up from the table, where she is hurriedly writing as, beside her, a small knife chops up several carrots on its own accord. Ginny has grown quite adept at these little cooking spells as she's aged. Now she raises an eyebrow at her daughter. "Our what?"

Lily huffs impatiently. "The little silver charms that hung from the back door! Dad bought them for me years ago; you know what I'm talking about!" She pushes her long, dark hair out of her face and glares at her mother. "They always rang, even when the wind was still. It was my favorite bit of magic."

Ginny purses her lips. "I don't know, Lils. Ask your father, I suppose. He might be cleaning them or something?"

Lily grins. "Dad, cleaning something? I highly doubt it."

"Oi, what's all this?" Albus slides into the room, retrieving an apple from the counter and eyeing his family members with interest. "Dad's cleaning?"

Lily laughs. "My wind chimes are missing." Slowly, her smile fades, and she lifts a finger to point at her sibling. "You and James aren't pranking me, are you?"

"Like we'd bother," Albus replies, with a cheeky grin. "We ran out of good pranks for you years ago."

"Don't I know," says Lily, rolling her eyes, and she sighs. "Well, I'm off to ask Dad, then. But if I find out it was you, Al, I'm going to kill James."

"Hang on, why would you want to kill James? I can come up with my own tricks, you know!" Albus reaches for his sister, but Lily laughs loudly and darts off, and Al chases after her, yelling about just who, exactly, is going to kill who. Ginny sighs good-naturedly and returns to writing her Quidditch column, wondering yet again just how she's allowed her children to turn out so very much like her siblings.

"Dad? Dad? Dad!" The office door bursts open, and three Potter children spill into the room like an ocean wave, lapping up against the side of the desk. "Dad, where are my wind chimes?" Lily's voice is nearly drowned out by the boys, who are yelling about Quidditch.

"It worked for the Arrows two years ago," Al is saying, tugging at James's sleeve. "They won the Championship with that very same move!"

"Are you seriously going to listen to Uncle Ron?" James bellows, thumping Al hard on the back. "He's utterly useless at Quidditch!"

"I wouldn't exactly say that," Harry interrupts loudly, with a wink for Albus, who beams at him. "And why are we arguing in my office?"

"Because, Dad, I'm trying to find my wind chimes, and these two won't let me be for two seconds." Lily glares daggers at her brothers.

"Wind chimes?" Harry looks thoughtful.

"I'm telling you, it's brilliant," says Al, and Lily shoves him hard towards the door. "What the bloody hell?"

"Get away from me, Albus!" Lily shrieks, and James backs away slowly, not wanting to be next.

"She's bats, honestly," James mutters, as he and Al slink out of sight. Lily slams the door behind them.

"Be nice to your brothers," Harry says, but he's grinning.

"The wind chimes are missing," Lily says firmly; she breathes deeply. "Have you taken them?"

Harry frowns and shakes his head. "Did you ask your mother?"

"She told me to ask you."

Harry grins again. "How helpful. Well, I suppose, if we can't find them, we'll just have to get you a new set, then, won't we?"

"But I don't want a new set, Dad! I loved those chimes; you couldn't possibly find one that's better than the old ones." Lily frowns.

"Oh, I don't know; I think you might be surprised."

Lily is not used to the peculiar expression on her father's face. "Dad, do you know something? Because those chimes meant a lot to me, and if everyone's playing with me, I really don't like it."

"Why don't you just go outside and take another look. I'll bet they've been right under your nose all along," says Harry, and he pats her arm with a warm smile.

Lily gives him an odd stare, and slowly backs out of the office. "Well… all right, then. I'll let you know." She turns to go, stops in the doorway, and looks back, her face scrunched up in confusion. "I'll let you know," she says again, softly, and leaves.

Harry chuckles to himself.

Lily opens the back door and cautiously pokes her head out. It's just as she thought; the chimes are still missing. She huffs, about to slam the door shut, when a movement from the yard catches her eye. There's somebody out there, and Lily's eyes widen as she lets out a shriek. "You're here!" She blasts the door open and rushes out, leaping off the steps.

"Oh, wait!" Luna cries, holding her hands out, and Lily stops short at the bottom of the stairs, her arms comically windmilling as she tries not to stumble from the momentum of her excitement. "You've got to take your shoes off," Luna continues, grinning like mad.

Lily raises an eyebrow skeptically. "Luna, it's winter," she says; "My toes will freeze."

"They won't," Luna replies, "trust me."

And, of course, Lily does. She pulls her shoes off hurriedly and rushes out onto the frozen lawn, which feels surprisingly warm and soft on her feet. "Ooh, what did you do?" She asks, laughing, as she darts across the grass and throws herself at Luna, enveloping her in a very tight hug.

"Oh, it isn't me," Luna says excitedly, returning the hug with equal fervor. "It's the Flitterspinks; I've brought some back from France. They love the cold, you know." She beams down at the ground with pride. "Eat up the frost and make your feet all tingly; it's lovely, isn't it?" She raises her eyes back to Lily, who grins, and the two of them giggle.

"This is one of those things Auntie Hermione would yell at you for telling me, isn't it?" Lily asks, squishing her toes deeper into the dirt; it does tingle, actually, in a very pleasant sort of way.

"Of course," says Luna, and she takes Lily's hand. "Come; I have a present for you."

Lily squeals with happiness and squeezes Luna's hand, allowing the older woman to lead her to the edge of the yard. "Is it behind the tree?" Lily asks eagerly, quite enjoying the feel of Luna's fingers intertwined with hers. Luna has very soft skin, and it soothes Lily.

"Not exactly," says Luna, pulling Lily around the tree; the house was hiding them from view. "Look around for it."

Lily scans the ground and the side of the tree with a furrowed brow, for she can't see a thing. She opens her mouth to question this, and at that moment a cold breeze sweeps through them, sending peals of a very familiar sort through the air. Lily cries out and looks above her, where her very own wind chimes hang from the lowest branch of the tree. "My chimes!" She cries. "You found them! But where were they?"

Luna laughs. "You'll have to look again," she says, "for they aren't exactly your wind chimes, not as they were. I took them and made some adjustments."

"You took them," Lily says in wonder, and she reaches up to pull the chimes off the tree. The slightly frayed rope has been replaced with a newer, stronger tether, and the delightful little charms, the little metallic figurines Lily so loves, have changed. When her father first gave her the set, it consisted of little silver animals, cats and birds and fish. Now, most of these remain, and have been polished, but in the midst of the circus, dangling rather lower, are two decidedly familiar female figures, with their arms reaching for one another. "Is it us?" Lily asks, looking back up at Luna with her eyes wide.

"It is," Luna says, and she beams again. "And watch, as the wind blows."

Lily holds the wind chimes up, and when the breeze gusts, the girls come to life, dancing and embracing one another. "They look like they're kissing," Lily breaths, watching with delight. "Oh, this is beautiful magic, Luna! You're amazing."

"I suppose that's why we fit so well together," Luna says happily. "We're both amazing."

Lily laughs, and squeezes Luna's fingers ever tighter. "I love it," she says. "I love you."

"Happy Valentine's Day, my Lily," says Luna, and as they kiss, their little chiming clones mimic them.
