Giovanni and Greed are two very strong individuals, and there are reasons their relationship works quite well. This would be due to their personalities and the desires that the other two has for their own lives, simply coinciding. I wrote this, one could say, for the fact that they've known each other six months, and it's been interesting for me to go back and read some of their threads, so this gave me a brand new chance to look at their relationship. The best place to start is at the beginning, of course. And through some of their experiences and conversations with each other. Then I'll move onto the analyzing of how it really is.
Giovanni and Greed
first spoke March 27, 2008. Their conversation was simply over getting a job and having a spar as a form of interview. Between their first conversation and
their second, not much had changed There was still a lot of formalities. And it is clear that while they were openly talking, there was still unsurities about whether or not they would become friends. But by their
third conversation, the two had gotten much more comfortable. They are seemingly flirting (or what one would call their type of flirting). They're actually bantering a little bit between each other as they talk. Their
fourth conversation was very similar to the third; in that the two of them were flirting. It became clear that even without anything else, the two were quick friends. Though even though they were friends, it did not mean that Giovanni was
always friendly with Greed. They both have very demanding personalities.
The next stage of their relationship was almost more of a bantering, when it got through the initial stages. The
times when Greed insisted upon calling Giovanni "puppy" and Giovanni would get frustrated with it constantly. The bantering, for both of them, could almost be considered affection. And then Greed "encouraged" Giovanni to
attend a dance with him. They go threw a
couple threads involving
business and the occasional bantering between one another. As time progresses, they do get
closer, and Giovanni is more willing to actually be someone that, while they still banter, Greed can almost rely on as a constant. And Giovanni starts to see Greed that some way. It becomes more clear how alike the
two of them think.
Now, from here, the relationship once again starts to change. Giovanni is becoming progressively more dependent on Greed in the entire "relationship". When Greed
gets his powers back, Giovanni still is talking about the aggression that he gave Greed in the first place, saying that despite how they have their "moments" where they are less violent, and more
friend-bantering (while still bordering almost on a level of flirting), they will always maintain that need for blood in how they work. To Giovanni and Greed
violence is affection. During the brief Dark Tower episode, the two of them did get closer, and Greed indulging Giovanni in his desire to be injured, but
not totally destroying him was satisfactory for Giovanni, at least. He appreciated [quite a lot] that Greed was willing to do this for him, and then handle him after everything. That he was willing to indulge him in his request and not just ignore it.
There was a time where they had a conversation
with Anemone, which led to them discussing sex. They occassionally discuss the possibility of when
Giovanni would get his powers back. Giovanni begins to develop a resent for Bou shortly after this, perhaps because he's become one of Greed's "prey" (if you will). He openly did not like the idea of others getting near Greed as he was, and was more than willing to play the part of the jealous lover without actually being that. Giovanni
likes his place with Greed, and does not desire for another to have that sort of position with the other. The two do celebrate
by going out on a very bloody date when Giovanni is finally restored to his complete self.
Then there was the "apocalypse" of sorts caused by Neffe, among the commotion was the compilation of events, where Giovanni both
deaged, and then later had the
love spell and personality reversal. During his time as a Child, Giovanni enjoyed Greed's company, he started off spending his time with Heine, but then later moved on to stay with Greed. At this time, because Greed was a woman, Giovanni latched onto him as his "Mother" figure. He spent his time around the bar, being jealous a sa kid whenever Greed spoke to others. Already a slightly possessive child. When he grows back up and is hit with both the love spell and the personality reversal, he confesses to Greed that he loves him and acts very oddly. Now, something quick to understand is that Giovanni is not in love with Greed, he sees Greed
as his, and not so much as someone he is in a "relationship" with. It probably is something that spread to him from Greed and he somehow learned it, but he did manage to.
Greed is
poisoned, by Zhygure, which sends Giovanni on a three-day sleepless search for the antidote that he is, unfortunately, unable to handle. He fights Mello for it, which causes Mello to suggest that you only need half for it to work. Unfortunately, as a result of the antidote, Greed is
unable to remember Purgatory, and as a result, Giovanni. Giovanni
attempts to force the memory upon Greed by shooting him. But it was ineffective, and Greed runs off. Which essentially sends Giovanni on a
small rampage throughout the city. He was more than willing to tear it apart in his search for Greed.
By now, Giovanni's superb at handling Greed. He knows the ideal ways to get him to calm down, and attempts to contain his temperament where it'll cause harm to himself. Shortly after
Lily arrived,
Giovanni died, if anything, the instances of when he died, and then
when he returned to life are very strong signs of how their relationship works.
When Heine leaves, Giovanni decides to
go exploring, which causes
Greed to be upset, and he expresses it by
avoiding Giovanni. This could almost be considered their first "lover's quarrel", but after a week's time, the two were quickly back to where they always were.
Now, onto the less looking at conversations, and how they actually behave. Giovanni and Greed did quickly jump into what they started with. After a couple week's time the two had slept together. But their relationship is interesting in that considering that even after six months, there is no love, or at least what the average description of "love" would be. They both provide something for the other that they desire to have, and they are compatible. Greed desires possessions - yes? Giovanni has no issue with being a possession. Greed fufills the need from Giovanni to be the top favorite. Something he can not get from mother, but only can seemingly get from being around Greed.
I will reiterate. They are not in love. And it's not to be misunderstood as that. It'd be hard to even say they're "together", considering neither of them are bound to the idea of being with a single person, and their interests lie elsewhere, but you could almost consider Greed to be a place that Giovanni knows he can return to, even when it may not work like that with anyone else. They express their affection entirely different from anyone else, but it can be assured that through the snark and violence, that there is some form of demented affection between the two of them. (They're not very into the roses and poetry, however, they both dig the guns and various weapons.)
At first Giovanni simply used Greed as an outlet who could give him attention, and gave him a job, but now he actually enjoys his company, and wouldn't mind being with him constantly. Greed is a sufficient distraction from Heine and other outside problems - like any of the other residents. It has crossed his mind lately, since Greed brought it up - what it would have been like if Giovanni was from Greed's world and then he could belong to him entirely. While he knows it is not possible, Giovanni does think about these things.
They enjoy fighting each other. They enjoy sleeping with each other. And they enjoy bantering with each other. No other way to sum it up, really.
