my grandparents arrived at a time when there was a high demand for immigrant labor in american cities. my family started in new york, and then moved to chicago.
i think that it's still the case, today, that employment opportunities are most plentiful in urban areas. people who need to "earn a living" tend to be forced to live in, or very near, a city.
i guess that i'm playing out the end of an early 20th century game. the demand for labor has fallen; the cost of living has risen; america has changed.
having an advanced degree would have meant having a highly portable asset. it would have made things easier; ditto for teacher certification.
problems with rural america: as mentioned, unemployment - few opportunites; deeply felt hostility towards "outsiders" - especially people of other races/religions; etc.
*CHCH thing: two 50-60 y/o ladies a market last week were from rotura - how weird is that...
