My feelings a bout this issue are a good bit more complicated than they used to be. I am actually quite close to someone who did something bad to a child...but they WERE a child at the time, and had, in turn, been sexually abused. The latter is probably true of most of these men, although it's no excuse.
I have more sympathy than ever for the issue of sexual compulsion, but less sympathy than ever for people who don't try to get help for it.
This issue is really quite pertinent to me right now, as I've just started a new rotation at the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center in Nashville. I definitely believe in the cycle of violence, and what sort of society are we when we claim that individuals can be rehabilitated and then pull crap like this?? It's like the proverbial dangling carrot. Anyway, I just read this article and was immediately disgusted and angered, but I do realize what a complicated issue it is.
